Departures to call it a day

2019-11-08 by Kurai | 51 Comments
Scottish Melodic Hardcore band Departures will be splitting up following two shows in February next year (one in Scotland and one in London). The reason for this split is due to the health of vocalist James McCean, who has had health issues following a heart attack he suffered on stage while on tour with Touche Amore in February 2017. Full statement from the band below:

A few of you have probably noticed that we've been quiet for the last while. As you may or may not know, I had a heart attack during the Touche Amore tour in Leeds in 2017. We played a show in Glasgow last August, but a few months after that I was diagnosed with Vascular Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (vEDS), an extremely rare condition that essentially means my entire vascular system is fragile, and this was the cause of the heart attack.

With daily medication I can lead a fairly normal life. It does however place some constraints on what I can and can’t do, and this frustratingly means that I can’t do a whole lot of physical activity. No specialist is able to say for sure if singing the way I do is what triggered the heart attack, but my body tells me it must have played some role.

When people find out they have vEDS, it usually costs them their lives, so I am very lucky to still be alive. I have wrestled with this fact for a good while now and realised that it’s probably for the best that I don’t sing the way I do anymore. So it is with the heaviest [and damaged] of hearts that we bring Departures to an end.

We are going to play two last shows to say thank you to everyone that has ever cared about this band. We’ve managed to do so much more than we could have ever imagined and the amount of support we have received throughout the years has never stopped blowing our minds.

I may not be able to give it everything the way that I used to, so we need as many of you as possible to come to these shows and lend us your voice, and say goodbye to Departures with us.

The biggest love for absolutely everything you've done for us.

-- James, Danny, Andy, Sean and Ally.

love this band. shame to see em go but no better reason than "continuing to sing could literally kill me"

Yeah, I’m gutted as they are genuinely one of my favourite bands to the extent that I named my band after a song from their last album. However, the reasoning is 100% valid, even if it takes the piss that yet another one of my favourite bands splits up while mediocre bands like Nickelback and Scouting for Girls continue to release music.

Their guitarist Danny is in a band called Antiguo that meld Melodic Hardcore with Post Punk. I definitely recommend checking them out

this is the saddest fucking news ever i hope his health can improve and be able to do the shows at least without trouble. at least they left behind one of the most impressive discographies of any modern underground emo band around so i'm not too upset

Yeah, they went pretty quiet after that show, but of course, that's due to his diagnosis.

^ This, the most tragic thing is that it seems like the band would happily continue if this wasn't the case. Even more tragic than the fact that they're splitting up while Nickelback, Falling in Reverse, Scouting for Girls, Brokencyde, and 30 Seconds to Mars are still active.

Departures and Casey splitting a year apart from each other is pretty heartbreaking. I also get the feeling that Touche Amore might split up after their next album...

Death Touches Us definitely deserved more attention, possibly one of my favourite albums of the decade (although I’m always flip flopping between that and Teenage Haze). It’s unfortunate that it came out at a time when the Rock Press (I.e. Kerrang! and Rock Sound) were trying to push 5 Seconds of Summer as a Rock Band and the underground scene wasn’t getting as much attention as it has been in the past couple of years.

Emotive melodic hardcore vocalist has to quit because his literal heart can't take the strain of tour life. This is some Shakespeare plot kinda shit.

Definitely a bummer. These guys released some really incredible stuff.
