Joao Gilberto dies at 88

Renowned Brazilian musician João Gilberto, commonly recognised as a vital pioneer in the Bossa Nova movement, passed away at his home in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, local time. He was 88 years old.

The cause of his death is not officially known, but comes after several years of seclusion and at least a decade of mental health and financial problems: it is more likely, however, that he will be remembered for a remarkable life, including his uniquely plaintive, saudade-rich voice, hypnotic and bittersweet guitar chords and intimate production founded on traditional Samba, a combination which would come to be known as "Bossa Nova". The movement would define Brazilian music throughout the '60s and '70s, with some claiming Gilberto's "Chega de Saudade" was the prognitor.

His renditions of the Latinamerican standards "Girl from Ipenema", "Quiet Nights" and "Águas de março" became the quintessential versions, while collaboration with Jazz musicians - considered unthinkably bold at the time - bore a successful 1964 album with Stan Getz, though it is his solo albums which will endure in posterity to many of his fans.

He leaves behind three children, an "incalculable legacy" and a plethora of albums worth any music devotees attention. Rest in Peace, João.
