Sadly no, not really. Sounds like the Dyers Eve remaster has a bit of a bass lift in terms of overall EQ, but since it's a remaster and not a remix, they can't just go back in and turn the bass track up. Wish they'd do an entire remix instead.

I get they don't want to re-mix it because they like the sound of the original, but they could have at least included a re-mix as a bonus disc in the box-set. Sadly, if they're not going to do it with this, they never will.

Apparently a remix isn't possible based on interviews I read with Steve Thompson, one of the engineers, and the album's producer Flemming Rasmussen. They said there were so many edits on the master tapes that age has pretty much left them FUBAR. A proper remaster would have actually been kinda cool, and it's hard to tell the true quality from a youtube video, but it does sound pretty damn brickwalled. Bummer.

But they were able to use each isolated stem in Guitar Hero Metallica, which is how those "enhanced original bass" mixes make it onto YouTube...

The album is perfect without bass everyone can shut up now lol. Not like you'd be able to hear it anyways because

a) It's probably just following the guitars 99% of the time, just like it does on every other post-Cliff album. It's not like when they play these songs live there's some crazy bass parts that are inaudible on the record, or some "My Friend of Misery" esque part of a song where Jason has the spotlight but is just silence on the record. The only part on the entire album I can think of where the bass probably wouldn't follow the rhythm guitar exactly is the clean parts of "One".

b) The guitar tones are so bass-y already that you'd probably have to take some low end out of them too. The bass would barely cut through the mix otherwise. That's why ...And Justice for Jason sounds like dogshit. It's wayyyyy too much low end.

it's not even so much the lack of bass as it is the generally bad sound of the album in general, which supposedly was done specifically to make the drum sound Lars-approved. I want a remix and remaster to make it sound better in general, not just to fix the bass. MOP didn't really need a remix because it sounded fine beforehand, but at least the remix version brings out new elements of their sound; AJFA has always sounded bad and deserves to be fixed on a fundamental level.

All they need to do is a pay a teenage kid in autographs to re-record the bass tracks and mix that in

Gotta agree with this sentiment too. All all their "trve" fans did after the black album was whine and cry, begging for a return to roots. Then they finally did it (Death Magnetic) and they just get shit on because it didn't meet their expectations. Are you even an artist anymore if all you're doing is whatever your fans tell you to do? Good on them tbqh (though it's been stated plenty of times that they couldn't remix the album even if they wanted to because too many edits).

@zar I can get behind that, even if I do think the album is perfectly fine the way it is. Just not a fan of the "AJFA + louder bass = better album" shit that gets thrown around here/everywhere.

I haven't watched that doc in a really really long time but I don't think it's representative of how they normally act towards eachother. That was a really weird/rough time for them(James) and I feel like they would have broken up a long time ago if that was the norm (unless I'm forgetting some massive part of it or were just not on the same page)

you need an amp and good headphones, you can actually hear some notes played, but they're buried deep down in the mix, I tried to search for them in the original recording and never found them (I bought the official bass tab book in 1992)...

I made an EQ for this that sounds pretty insane if anyone wants to copy it into their EqualizerAPO or just enter the values in your own EQ. The format is "Frequency" "+/-DB"; etc. Most of the midrange is pumped and the lower treble is decreased by a fair amount.

not many eqs have that many bands because its pretty much a waste to create profiles that finnicky when you could just use a shelf (pro-q, pretty much the best digital eq there is has 24 for example)

There is no viable argument against Sabbath being the most influential metal band.

If you aren't using a graphic type EQ then you often want more bands for more control. But yes an EQ that lets you choose the width for each peak in a full graphic EQ would make it more simple and require less bands. I just used Equalizer APO, which does have a 15-band option also, because it's very low level and low resource when installed in Windows. Nothing extra needs to be actively opened for it to be enabled because it works directly with the Windows audio framework.

The mid-range for my EQ is increased by a large amount but for AJFA it's necessary. Especially if you're using accurate phones or speakers, the mid range (and to nearly the same degree bass, except for the echoey low-end that the original has) sounds absolutely missing on the non EQ'd version of the album.

I've been reading the same news every damn year. How many times this album has got a remaster? And every single time it sounds more fake and "plastic" compared to the original version.

Nevertheless, very interesting, I'll be checking out Equalizer APO and those settings.

Couple things to note. That EQ was made with my shitty laptop's Realtek output with trebly earphones so it might sound muddy on bassier speakers and require some adjustment. If I turn the volume in the spotify app all the way up I get what sounds like volume distortion for whatever reason but that seems to only be happening because the EQ has excessively raised DB values. Either way, the music itself is relatively clean so you can EQ it to make it sound really fucking good. I absolutely believe Metallica could re-mix all of their albums, even without the individual sources as people have mentioned, and make them sound great.

In other news, the site just updated the graphs to HTML5 from Flash. I had posted a thread about this a few hours ago and it seems I might've reminded them to make the update? They deleted my thread but yeah, new charts that don't require flash.

I'm so eager of this band at this point. Next year, what are they gonna do? Load, Reload, St. Anger and Death Magnetic remasters? ridiculous
