Coast drop Second Single

Art As Catharsis is proud to present the second single from experimental jazz act COAST’s self-titled debut: Obin – the contrasting, mellow follow-up to their groove-heavy first single, Blackline.

Still hewn with COAST's signature tempo changes, gliding saxophone and simmering keys, Obin is warm, smooth and comfortable as silk. The mood, weightlessness and gentle flow of the music conjures imagery of a heaving coastline – the main inspiration for COAST's heady jazz.
“Obin has a shimmer. It’s elusive and pretty,” says COAST drummer and composer Paul Derricott, reflecting his choice for single #2. “I wanted a sense of shifting movement, but in a nice way. As the piece develops, we explore some other vibes – but generally Obin is more reflective, floating away as it hopefully takes you along.”

This is the second cut from COAST's energetic, self-titled debut – riveting experimental jazz that fluctuates between heavy and silk-smooth, structured with the composition expertise of Paul Derricott.

COAST's debut marks an inspiring beginning to their own jazz renaissance, combining cleverly layered instrumentals, wide-sweeping tones and engaging compositions. You will find yourself washed clean under the music’s improvisational flow, the driving rhythms and the expansive melodies that the ensemble has pieced together – a veritable tide of funk and fury.

Delicate but rapid. Smooth but heavy. These characteristics usually stand as opposites, but COAST weave these elements together in faultless form. High in energy and full of energetic instrumentals, you can hear hot flushes of heavy rhythmic jazz similar to Kneebody, Mark Guiliana Quartet and Donny McCaslin throughout the album, along with a gentle hint of early BadBadNotGood’s contemporary sheen.

COAST's self-titled debut releases on 20 March, 2018. Their first single, Blackline, is out now.
