Ghost frontman sued

2017-04-05 by starboystargirl | 69 Comments
Ghost leader Papa Emeritus, aka Tobias Forge, is being sued by four former band members for missing wages and allowances for several years.

They are asking the court to penalize Forge 200,000 SEK – around £18,000.

The four former Nameless Ghouls claim they did not receive any compensation in 2012 but were eventually paid sporadic amounts when Forge was put under pressure. The Forge allegedly claimed there was no money available at the time.

the last band I was in had a collective account basically that went towards making shirts, recording etc. We found out our singer was just spending it on weed so me and my buddy stole all the money, donated all of it to charity and the band ended.

Oh shit, and that ended in just November, I was thinking this may have been from years ago. Financial problems are never a good sign in a band. I never took them to be band where only one or a few members crafted the music so it's kind of narcissistic for 4 of the bands members to be let go, it'll be interesting to see how it affects the music. Fascinating how volatile bands become when they go from nothing to blowing up.

I saw them in the end of 2015 and it was an amazing show, they kicked tons of ass, then I saw them almost exactly a year later and the charisma just wasn't there. I was a little let down but now it kind of makes sense if all of this was going on.

I'm just glad I saw them back in 2015 in the Meliora tour, if everything goes to shit at least I got to see them. Apparently the shows for their Popestar tour haven't been the best either.

It's just a shame this is all coming out after they release one hell of an album in Meliora and their international status is growing rapidly. They could be massive and who knows maybe they still will be.

Nergal already spilled the confirmation beans about Tobias, but it's still a little disheartening to have the illusion broken a bit. I wouldn't worry too much about the music suffering though, as far as I know/it seems, Tobias writes almost all of the material himself.

Ghost has always been kind of overhyped even if they're bringing back a long dead sound in a pretty intriguing way to the masses. It's still nice seeing typical non-metalheads get into them. I mean they're no Thergothon or Cryptopsy or anything super extreme but most people don't touch metal with a 90 foot pole.

Ghost aren't metal though. Love the band but I don't see any part of their sound as being metal and aesthetic shouldn't really play a part in that.

they make it sound like the ghoulies run the show, and they hire a new papa every album/tour. there's no way they could be strapped for cash after their latest production.

I'd say pop rock is kind of a stretch. I don't actually know what I meant by "long dead sound". I guess it's just to me they sound like a more modernized 70's metal/psychedelic band but I don't have the greatest ear for these things so maybe i'm wrong

Not really anything like that style, and even if it were, the genre is far from long dead and lives on in the underground like it always has

I've seen them tour every album since Opus and the band has always been consistent. Rumor has it they have used over 20 different "Ghouls" over the years touring. Not defending the non-payment of musicians but they were fucking electric in NYC last year, and after watching recent videos I have high hopes for this years US tour.

The new album should be interesting though. Fans know that Forge wrote a majority of the material, but Alpha was also a contributing factor. You feel his presence missed on Square Hammer which lacks that foreboding doom that underlay most of the bands work.

It's beginning to seem like the band itself is almost cult like. I didn't know Forge basically owned the band until now.

Another thing to think about is that they've been headlining large venues for a while now. That alone makes a comfortable living for a band. Its weird to me that they just recently noticed they weren't getting their share. And, even then, $18K seems low...

Damn Evok that article sorta dashed any hope this was only a legal issue.

@Crab while I disagree, it's way more likely that Tobias will be the one to continue and the rest of the band have already pretty much splintered off into other projects (MCC).
