Awesome news. Might be the best year of music since 2010 at this rate.
| |
we'll see how this goes
| |
first deftones, than radiohead, than thrice, later potentially brand new, now this?
sputniks gonna break
| |
nuclear blast LMAO
| |
please no more prog tribute albums
| |
holy christ! this came out of nowhere. SUPER stoked for this. glad they moved off roadrunner. they were so shit to the band in the lead up to the release of PC.
| |
mayh >
| |
So excited.
| |
what tommygun said
| |
mayh > [3]
| |
Pleb where are you cmon bro. You weren't the first comment on this article so you clearly hate Opeth.
| |
still only heard PC literally once smh. hope they bring back the metal
but yea tommy knowz
| |
Can't wait for a sixty minute free form proto-ambient blacked free form jazz solo.
Fucking hell.
| |
Put a ":" after the "https" for the link to work. change "https" to "http" for your link to work.
| |
really enjoyed PC, but will warmly welcome a return to the metal, if that so happens to be the case.
Excited!
| |
Just pissed myself.
AOTY incoming.
| |
still only heard PC literally once smh. hope they bring back the metal [2]
the screams are back????
| |
"AOTY incoming."
probably not
| |
THE GROWLS ARE BACKKKKKKKKKKKKKK - Pleb 2014
| |
Dude if they return I'll have to remove myself from this universe, evil Mikey is too much.
No but seriously PC was the worst 'Peth album so I hope this is an easy 5.
| |
pleb's opeth dream still the funniest thing to ever happen to this site
| |
PC was great but yeah all their others are better. I think they're going in a different direction from now on though.
| |
if theyre signed with nuclear blast now maybe growls and distortion will be part of their contract
#prayforopeth
| |
If they go metal again--even without the growls--I'll be happy. Straight prog rock Opeth is kinda meh.
| |
Their last great album was in 2005. Watershed was mostly pretty good, Heritage and Pale Communion do nothing for me though.
I wouldn't count on them going back to death metal, but I'd like them to at least make some decent prog. Damnation wasn't metal but it was still amazing.
| |
What a year for sputcore.
| |
pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase go back to metal
| |
not gonna happen. no way essence unfortunately
| |
half way through 2016 and this year is already better than 2015 and 2014 combined.
| |
YEEEEEEessssssssssssssssssssssssssSSSSS
| |
just let me pretend MO, LET ME DREAM
| |
im prob the second biggest opeth fanboy after pleb on sput
all of dem albums at least 4'
FUCKING WHAT
still cant believe it. this is the shortest time between albums they will have since ghost reveries if they really release it fall 2016
| |
Deal was confirmed in a Porsche driving at 150 mph you say?? GOD IS ALLIIIIIVVVEEEEE
| |
please no more prog tribute albums [2]
| |
this year is absurd
| |
'nuclear blast LMAO'
Maybe it won't be watered down retro-prog worship bullshit this time around. Maybe some of the other bands on the label can light a fire under their asses.
| |
'Sorceress' totally sounds like 80s prog again so I think a lot of Opeth fans will be disappointed again. I am looking forward to it.
| |
yawn..
hope its an 80's glam rock album, that would be lit.
| |
please no more prog tribute albums [3]
| |
"yawn..
hope its an 80's glam rock album, that would be lit."
You want this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOrXDNf0UgA
| |
Can almost guarantee Mikael is done with DM now.
| |
"'Sorceress' totally sounds like 80s prog again so I think a lot of Opeth fans will be disappointed again."
Sounds more power metal to me
| |
"You want this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOrXDNf0UgA"
better riffs than their last two joints tbh.. i wouldnt mind them going full out Scorpions Wind of Change/No One Like You route.
| |
Im totally fine with heavy music and him singing clean. He's done growling and i feel he hates it doing it live
| |
"'Sorceress' totally sounds like 80s prog again so I think a lot of Opeth fans will be disappointed again."
80's prog? lol
| |
guess he meant 70s
| |
If no death metal, I'd really hope for something like Damnation again. That album was so smooth. Even got some of my anti-metal friends to admit they loved it after a month and then as soon as I told them it was a death metal band they told me they fucking hated it lmfao. Oh, I guess that makes sense.....wtf lol.
| |
Im totally fine with heavy music and him singing clean. [2]
| |
Please not another Damnation.
| |
just something new but distinctly opeth. no more homages, even to something from their own catalog
| |
I hope it's gonna sound good. I've recently been getting into this band.
| |
Orchid is still their best album ¯_(ツ)_/¯
| |
I've tried so many times to get into the first three albums they have but for the life of me, I can't move past the quality of the production. But I really dig Ghost Reveries, Blackwater Park and Watershed.
| |
fucking casuals
| |
"Please not another Damnation.È
More like Dim Nation
| |
Morningrise is their best album and the production is one of the best parts
| |
Morningrise is their best album and the production is one of the best parts [2]
Swano, man.. Swano
| |
Hope this is good.
| |
shit, was it Swano? no wonder it stands out from the rest of their discog, it sounds so different...and so good
| |
stoked bro
| |
Swano is Jesus, Mikael is God, I'm the Messiah.
| |
I dug nearly everything from these guys, even the 70's pro rock stuff they did on their last two albums. However I hope they do bring back some of the haviness on this new record.
PS: Have to agree, their early stuff is just as unique as the Still Life - Blackwater years. Gotta jam to Morningrise in the future.
| |
Oh goodie, another shit '70s King Crimson-ish tribute album...yeay cloud..
| |
will be a solid 3.5
| |
Lindholm > Swano > Akerfeldt
| |
go the fuck back to metal
otherwise zzzzzz
| |
we need ghost reveries 2
| |
get the fuck in, I had a feeling they'd sign with NB
| |
Fantastic news!
| |
Mikael will probably never growl on record again but I'm hoping it isn't another 70's prog pastiche
| |
Great news!
| |
Good news. Hope they're going back to DOING WHATEVER THE HECK THEY WANT.
Blackwater Park was 15 years ago and MAYH is already 18 years old. Get over it or quit the band, there are a hundred others copying their previous style. Man, Sputnik has to grow up at last. Heritage ruled, PC wasn't half bad.
| |
"Blackwater Park was 15 years ago"
jesus christ
| |
If I want to listen to KC I'll do exactly that, I don't need Opeth doing an impression of them. Do something new and you'll have my full interest. PC was fun but flawed.
| |
band sucks, this album will suck as well
| |
Well, if Opeth want to play like KC, they don't need fans telling them that they should play what the audience wants. Do whatever you want and you'll have the full interest of the people who like your music. And that's it, they're artists, not entertainers. PC was fun but flawed, indeed. But, who am I to say to Opeth ''Nah, man, I don't like the new path you're going down.''? I'm not obliged to listen to them.
| |
Morningrise is their best album and the production is one of the best parts [3]
| |
morningrise sucks ass
| |
morningrise is 2nd worst in my eyes tbh
| |
ok, not exactly. Black Rose Mortal is a very adventurous song.
| |
Let's get serious here, Morningrise is 5/5. The whole album is adventurous.
| |
Black Rose Immortal
| |
"80's prog? lol"
Typo ;)
| |
Immortal*
| |
morningrise a 5/5 more like 5/5/2
| |
morningrise rules you pussies
| |
average ass bm album, it doesn't even hatred smh it's just ~sad~ bm
| |
yeah, lame ass bm album
| |
bm album? stop sniffing glue you damn kids
| |
sorry, shit* album my bad i apologize smh
| |
jk! >:]
| |
Morningrise is their best album and the production is one of the best parts [4]
| |
make a metal album again mikael you pussy
| |
Ghost Reveries is their best album - one of my favorites of all time - you silly people.
| |
Honestly they can make fucking whatever, it'll still be pretty good.
| |
NO THEY CANT
| |
mikael can
| |
"sorry, shit* album my bad i apologize smh"
but based on your rating it IS average
make up your mind and stop flip flopping bitchez
| |
I'd love to see an original mix of Mikael's clean vocals and distorted instruments. Two hippie-rock throwbacks is enough.
| |
mikael pls growl
| |
he's a good songwriter it'll be good
| |
There won't be a single review the first day its released. All 429,000 minutes will have put everyone to sleep.
| |
Last two albums were really not interesting for me. I don't even care if the growls are gone just make better music, most of Ghost Reveries and Watershed's best moments were without growls anyway.
| |
I just want good lyricism. When Mikael wants to write stuff that's good, it's good. When he's bored, it's apparent (see, Elysian Woes). Just write from the heart. No more 'typical Opeth lyrics' like in the last album.
| |
Eternal Rains is still probably my favourite.
| |
Yes, the bookends are the best thing that happened to this album.
I'm wondering how the album art is going to be this time. Hope it's better than the last one. Actually, we all hope everything is going to be better than PC, even if we like it.
| |
They haven't done anything for me in awhile. Not holding my breath. Especially since I remember Mikael saying he's never going back to their roots.
| |
That's not necessarily bad. C'mon, they've already shifted genres and all their eras have masterpieces to show. Of course there are albums not highly regarder (Deliverance or Pale Communion), but that's the thing with evolving.
| |
the bookends are the best thing that happened to this album [2]
PC and Deliverance are great but their weakest. I'm hoping that Sorceress will be a new direction for the band, to progress in the true sense of the word.
| |
Or, if they can't do something innovative, at least I hope they perfect/improve their recipe. Katatonia's latest album is only a bit more technical, but it's actually ol' samey Katatonia (at least to my inexperienced ears, haven't delved into their catalogue) but it still kicks ass.
| |
"Maybe some of the other bands on the label can light a fire under their asses."
if they already have it named, its probably too late to be influenced by their move. they likely have most of the album done.
| |
Heritage and Pale Communion are depressing when you look at Watershed backwards. It'd be nice if they hopped back on the metal train.
| |
zamn the hype is real
| |
yea I hope for more metal
| |
people still think this band are capable of making a good album after their last two? expecting this to be a solid 2.8
| |
yes, because inspiration isn't finite. Jeez, why the mean comments?
| |
I liked their last couple albums more than probably most of the users on here, but we'll see how it turns out. Surprised they didn't talk about Steven Wilson being attached to it, but he's gonna be somewhere, I bet.
By the way, Morningrise and Ghost Reveries kick ass, but Still Life is king.
| |
"please no more prog tribute albums"
This x 100000000
| |
no more music ever from everyone
| |
@Furyroad97 It will be fun if Steven is not involved, but I bet he is. I kind of think that Mikael sees him as a mentor as much as he sees him as a friend.
| |
What's a prog
| |
I don't think Ste[hen will have anything to do with this but who knows, maybe he'll just end doing the 5.1 mix.
| |
Oh damn nice. I just hope it isn't dull and safe like PC. Hopefully Mikael takes risks and moves the band forward. Enough 70's prog worship. Looking forward to Axe's drumming on this one
Also, signed to Nuclear Blast? That's random
| |
it feels like so long ago that i was actually excited for a new opeth album
| |
Soooooo fucking pumped for this
| |
Nuclear Blast gave them a vanity label so that probably swung it for them. Bands love having their own "labels" which are really just a bigger label releasing it under a different name. See: HevyDevy Records. It's basically just InsideOut/Century Media.
| |
Ah, now it makes sense.
| |
ZZZZZZ FUCKING SNORING
| |
Yeah I never really understood the point of this imprint bullshit
| |
*Sigh* I wish I could be excited for this.
| |
Well if you own the imprint then you can take it with you to other labels or turn it into its own outright label later on, plus as you own the name and rights to the imprint you get more money as a result. Some acts that have vanity labels will also sign other acts to it but that rarely happens.
| |
ahh it's that time of the cycle for the 'peth hype for sput, i see
| |
I hope they do something weird. That's the only way I'll start to respect them again.
| |
I'm more concerned with a new In The Woods... album tbh.
| |
Don't think they are bad but everything post watershed hasn't been enjoyable to me.
| |
Sounds more power metal to me
Please be Opeth Power Metal!
| |
Please not be more dad rock worship. You can be heavy and still have cleans.
| |
It doesn't necessarily have to be as heavy as old school Opeth, but it has to be more interesting and experimental than PC. I can't tell what the direction will be with the album title. It could be extremely dark and heavy, or old school psychedelic rock, or more stoner/doom, or proggy.
| |
Heritage was solid but PC really kind of lost me. Fredrik had some awesome solos tho
| |
Fredrik is a really good player
| |
please do hip hop album
| |
I heard heritage twice and never even finished pale communion.
So sad, since I spinned their earlier shit like a million times.
| |
they are letting their 70's influences run rampant. We get it, you like King Crimson and Jethro. Why was it that damnation worked so well? It combined their 70's sound with the weird chords and stuff of their metal work. This newer stuff is just 70's Rock copy.
| |
there is no way this isn't going to be more prog rock, which im happy with but mikael needs to fuck off the oversinging. elysian woes is one example of a good song ruined by overcooked vocals. his clean vocals sound best in songs like face of melinda and benighted. they've proven they can definitely still put together incredible music, i.e. eternal rains. here's hoping it's more that and less not that.
| |
"please do hip hop album"
STRAIGHT OUTTA SWEDEN CRAZY MUTHAFUCKA NAMED MIKAEL
| |
"there is no way this isn't going to be more prog rock"
yea, especially based on how quickly they put this together I can see it being more of the same
| |
aw shii
| |
I like their prog Rock so either way I'm excited for this
| |
i think it's mentioned in the article link somewhere in the beginning, that they've taken a new approach. Who knows? I also believe that the time lapse between albums has nothing to do with the sound of it. Let's just wait and see.
| |
JPOP AOTY CONFIRMED
| |
we want a djnet album
| |
The most exciting news I've read this year
| |
I have something to confess
somebody needs to put a stop to Steve Wilson
| |
Nnnnope
| |
lolno
| |
HCE live was one of the best experiences of my life and I hope to have many more in the future.
| |
daaamn, quite unexpected this is. not that I complain tho
| |
I love everything Still Life and after and the last 2 records are amazing, I'm a fan and Im sure it will be killer
| |
Good news. I'll be sure to check this out. Autumn-winter weather is good Opeth weather.
| |
Best News in I don't know long.Be Metal!!!! Thread rules hard, where's KILL?
| |
Kill is jackin it to old Death albums
| |
"Please be Opeth Power Metal!"
omg please
| |
"I love everything Still Life and after and the last 2 records are amazing, I'm a fan and Im sure it will be killer"
uhhhhh
| |
didn't realise camel cover bands could get signed these days.
| |
^Still Life was a long time ago bro, they don't actually cover Camel anymore.
| |
lmao
| |
I hope you know what I'm referring to and don't just think I'm joking.
| |
lmao
| |
ye
| |
ye
| |
nooooooooooope
| |
the band just put a teaser up on their fb page. definitely gonna be more prog rock by the sounds of it
| |
Sounds like more PC from the small preview. Hopefully they switch it up and get weird with it.
| |
mike looks bored as fuck
| |
That was actually quite promising. But yah, mike looks like a knob sitting there like he smells shit.
| |
nuclear blast tend to get awkwardly samy samy at times. I like NB overall but mainly because they seem to have half of europes metal bands under contract and many upon them that I like.
| |
Hahaha Mikael is like 'erm, cut that shit out right now'z
| |
He might as well be tired. C'mon, Sputnik is filled with judges nowadays. Relax. The music sounds really nice. Can't wait to hear the part in its place.
| |
i hate people who appear on photos
| |
"mike looks bored as fuck"
lol either that solo is definitely NOT making it to the album, or the nigga on the keyboard is getting fired
| |
yes, because every band selects a part they hate as a teaser.
| |
lol he was probably just joking, but that keyboard solo sounded like something DT would do in their recent albums. It was a cool little preview though, and I'm hoping they really step outside their comfort zone on Sorceress
| |
mikael what would it take to make you growl again?
| |
he sings better than growls
| |
I would love for a Ghost Reveries or Watershed sounding album in a similar, or maybe new, style but with singing and no growls.
| |
that would be great, but hasn't Mikael stated that if they were to do a heavy album, it would be an old school death metal one?
| |
I really don't see that happening. I mean did you hear that they almost added a crazier section with growling at the end of River? I was really surprised to hear that, I mean it's a good song, but it's like the happiest, cheesiest they've ever sounded lol
| |
Double post
| |
I should be happy, but heritage and pale communion are so meh. They're not even bad, they're just
not Opeth?
| |
why do people write double post?
| |
because they accidentally double post?
| |
Oh, damn, I got it. I thought people just wrote double post, but now I get it. Yes, brainfart. Never actually put my mind around it. Forget I even asked.
| |
God help you
| |
His growls are fucked up these days, let him stick to what works for him.
| |
Added the teaser video where Mikael Akerfeldt looks thoroughly unimpressed, ha ha.
| |
he looks like he's just concentrating lol, am i the only one who does that when listening to something? i get completely serious and zone every else out lol
| |
Oh nice thanks Willie, I thought it was just on facebook.
He gave him the boot at the end, when the keyboardist looked right at him. Pretty obvious. Like I said, it's obviously comedic.
| |
"hasn't Mikael stated that if they were to do a heavy album, it would be an old school death metal one?"
id like to hear a death metal Opeth.
| |
It was a weird comment to make, not just because they're now farther from death metal than they've ever been really, but because that idea pretty much exists with Bloodbath's first and third albums where Mikael is on vocals.
| |
only he was on vocals tho, maybe they'd like their own experience at it? idk i don't know a lot about opeth
i always thought they were dm tho? not a huge metalhead myself so ofc i'm ignorant but
| |
lol, he sure does. That teaser sounded really cool though. Very 70s.
| |
I mean Mikael and the drummer Axenrot played with Bloodbath so that's half the band that used to be in Bloodbath, not counting the new keyboardist they've only had for like 3 years who's only really done space and prog stuff his career. His only real connection with metal has been playing old Opeth songs live since joining after Heritage. That leaves the two Martins, one of which has played death metal before, so yeah.
| |
"i always thought they were dm tho? not a huge metalhead myself so ofc i'm ignorant but"
Yeah they were progressive death metal. No longer, by the looks of it. Which is cool by me, I dig this stuff.
| |
The other Martin, the bass player, seemed like more of a prog guy as well given the types of basses he's played.
Also they weren't really death metal outside of Mikael's vocals, at least according to him in a recent interview. When you really analyze the music, you realize it's true, except some sections of maybe Deliverance and the first three that sounded a bit melo dm/bm at times.
| |
"that idea pretty much exists with Bloodbath's first and third albums where Mikael is on vocals."
but it wasnt Mikael writing any of the riffs, who knows how Opeth would sound if they went death metal.
| |
"Yeah they were progressive death metal."
i wouldnt say they were ever death metal, the only things they had in common with that genre were the vocals and double bass. other than that, their music was never very death metal at all.
| |
Yeah what talons and adolf said. The growls made them get stuck with the progressive death metal tag by fans and critics, but the "death" part of that is pretty much the growls and not so much the music, which is pretty unclassifiable, especially in Still Life and BWP.
| |
The Nuclear Blast "kingpin" drives a porsche and drives uber fast? Seems right for a poser label. Opeth and Nuclear Blast seem right together.
They havent been relevant since '96. Move on people
| |
"poser label."
get out.
| |
will suck dick (for crack)
| |
"HellPriest" is a fucking badass name
| |
bloc... glad you're still here. That is all....
| |
Aww that's really sweet haha
Good to see you too man
| |
You're the only one left that I know. ha ha.
| |
LOL I miss some of the older guys too yeah

and those are only the bands I personally care about. 0/10 label FOAD agreed

also using the word "poser". yeah priest, you should probably commit a bit of the ol' suicide.
| |
savage
| |
just growl once plz
| |
Poser label haha
| |
also people taking that "driving in a Porsche" bit seriously rofl
| |
More recycled and boring prog rock from the 70's.
Yay
| |
If Opeth decide to make another album with growls I'd quite like to hear a predominantly death metal album incorporating some of the jazzy, adventurous moments of Watershed and Heritage.
I'd rather hear another prog album in the more adventurous vein of Heritage (not the 'safer' PC) than another typically Opeth light-and-shade prog metal album.
| |
Heritage was actually a great album, weird song structures and time sigs and a hazy ass vibe. PC was just kind of there. The drumming and awesome solos made were the best things about it.
| |
joined 06-18-16
yeah heritage is more interesting, but less accessible
| |
Heritage was good, Pale Communion was boring as shit.
| |
Dude I've been here for years
| |
Heritage is incredible, Pale Communion is their weakest album but by no means bad
| |
Heritage : 4 - 4.5
Pale Communion : 2.5 - 3.5
| |
im talking about Maco097
| |
opeth as a whole: 1.5-2.5
| |
sinternet as a human = not human
| |
Opeth aren't relevant you guys are right! That why this thread has over 200 comments...
| |
hope that it is more along the lines of ghost reveries.....their best album
| |
'sinternet as a human = not human'
i'm not the one who exclusively listens to prog tho
| |
I saw them at Ullevi Stadium opening for Iron Maiden last night.
Setlist was this:
Cusp of Eternity
The Devil's Orchard
Demon of the Fall
The Grand Conjuration
Deliverance
Mikael tried throwing me a guitar pick but gave the flimsiest throw ever haha. It was funny.
good set too.
| |
you are listening a lot to electronic music. COINCIDENCE??? I THINK NOT
| |
"Mikael tried throwing me a guitar pick but gave the flimsiest throw ever haha"
That noodle armed gooker
| |
"hope that it is more along the lines of ghost reveries.....their best album"
I won't argue but it had some weak moments that brought it down.
| |
Mikael looks bored as fuckkkkkkk.
| |
He's just concentrating and being funny
| |
kinda wish I understood Swedish so I could have gotten his jokes he made at Ullevi last week (has it really been almost a week???). I asked my Swedish buddy what he was saying but it didn't seem to really translate... that or they were just bad jokes haha.
| |
That said there was one I kinda got from certain body language and a mention of Steve Harris: In Sweden they just flip people off and where Steve is from, they're so special they get the V sign.
| |
