Envy singer leaves band

2016-04-26 by Space Jester | 23 Comments
Tetsuya Fukagawa, vocalist and founding member of the highly influential post-rock/hardcore outfit Envy has decided to leave the band. The following statement was issued by the band on April 1st via their facebook page:

"Statement - April 2016

Tetsuya Fukagawa, our vocalist who has been with us since the beginning, has decided to leave the band.

The remaining four members, Nobukata Kawai, Dairoku Seki, Masahiro Tobita and Manabu Nakagawa will continue on as envy.

We are proud of what we’ve accomplished over the past twenty years with Tetsu.
In consideration of these years and out of respect for all involved, we ask everyone to understand this is a private decision.

We wish Tetsu the best of luck and hope for all of his future endeavours to be successful.
We will still be playing at the Synchronicity ’16 - After Hours show on April 24th, featuring a few of our friends as guest vocalist.

We’ll be taking some time to concentrate on writing some new music after April.

Hope to see you there."

While there is no word of a new vocalist as of yet, the singer of Japanese post/math rock band Toe has filled in at least once, as seen in the video below.

Thanks to whichever staff broke up my paragraphs.

I know Tetsuya's vocals were a pretty common complaint but I liked them and it kinda sucks to see him go. Hopefully some fresh blood will do the band good.

Yeah, as much as I dug Tetsu's vocals for the most part, by some point they just got a bit stale. I'm excited to see if the replacement can bring in some much-needed fresh energy - or better yet, curious what the result would be if they were to release an instrumental record. I have a sneaking suspicion that could be really good if they were to go that route.

I'm hoping for the best from their subsequent records (if the band stays together for long after this), but I'm bracing for the worst.

Nah you're good, I didn't get that vibe from you

I kinda don't want them to be instrumental, the hardcore element has always made them what they are imo

Think they should experiment more like they do on their shorter releases, the Abyssal EP and the splits with Thursday and Jesu are some of their best work

It's unexpected, but it might be for the best on both sides. I love a lot of Envy's work, but the newer stuff was sounding a bit stale and his voice wasn't helping.

Damn, I had a chance to see them recently and I passed because I just didn't feel like going.

I hope they go instrumental. They always had the potential to be a better Mono than Mono, but the vocals, while they worked, put them in the "I have to be in the mood for them" category and held them back from being something I can really connect with.
