Protest the Hero drummer departs

2013-06-06 by Julianna Reed EMERITUS | 73 Comments
Progressive metal group Protest the Hero announced the departure of their drummer, Moe Carlson.

This marks the first line-up change PtH has gone through in its entire history, the band always functioning with the same members that have known each other from high school. Carlson's departure is, unfortunately, not the classically "cool" reason some of you may have hoped-- he's been going to school, and didn't want to half-ass his work with the band while remaining busy.

The band's new drummer has been confirmed as Chris Adler-- from Lamb of God. The change-up may seem a bit strange regarding the two group's differing musical styles, but Carlson revealed to Aux Tv that Adler and Protest the Hero have had a fruitful relationship over the years.

"He’s the one who helped me get my endorsements. I went in when he was tracking drums and hung out for the afternoon and heard some of the stuff. It sounds great,” he said. “He’s definitely been an influence on my playing style, so I think it’ll be a pretty natural fit for the record.”

So maybe it isn't too shocking that Protest the Hero's new drummer is the guy from Lamb of God. This shouldn't change the band's progress on its new record, though-- ever since Protest the Hero fueled its own IndieGoGo project a few months ago (and got more than double the support it expected), the band has been busy in the studio. So I guess we'll eventually find out what Chris Adler brings to PtH when this alleged record comes to fruition, and maybe even by the time Moe Carlson receives his proper schooling.

Pretty sure that article came from the Tyler Munro that used to write here. Funny coincidence.

Just got an email about it. Quite surprised at the news though, the band seemed like a tight bunch. But then again, the man has a good reason for leaving.

Moe's drumming didn't speak for itself very well. I'm sure he was a very talented drummer, but he never really found a way to speak above his peers.

I could kind of see it coming, with Moe being the only member missing from the indiegogo video, and with his schoolwork being the reason for missing that, he must he really serious about whatever degree he's going after, best of luck to him.. just sad to see the first member leave after all these years, and during such an exciting time for these guys.

it sucks cause they were friends. most bandmates aren't friends at the same time, hence so many line-up changes.

sad to see him go, and the end of the complete tight knit group

been listening to this band since high school and always thought moe (forgot his name until today lol) was a solid drummer. nothing spectacular but good enough. anyway, i actually enjoy most of scurrilous so i will definitely check out the new one when it's out.

Wow thought this was a joke. Moe carried himself well but never really stood out since the guitarists an bass were the musical force for the band anyway imo. Adler is a sick drummer. You can hate or love LoG an still acknowledge that.

Kind of a bummer. He never really stood out like other members did in their music, but still a really, really solid drummer.

I thought I read or heard something a while ago about him studying something like engineering, which I personally think is awesome, but I can't find anything that supports that. Anyone else hear that or am I just full of shit?

I always thought Moe was a pretty talented drummer. He kept some pretty complex polyrhythms going on Fortress that made absolutely no sense to my drumming mind. That said, I'm sure he had a valuable reason for leaving and I'm still pumped for this next album.

"they are both thrash-y metal bands" lol wow, and you say we are dumb.
and we were talking strictly about drumming, not the overall band sound/style. dumbass. the grooves Chris plays, and how he plays them, are totally different from Moe's, except for the breakdowns (but that's logical since the breakdowns are the least creative part in "metal" music today)

even the band said this: "“He’s coming from such a different spot than us. We come to heavy metal through punk rock. It must have been strange for him playing some punk beats, and some of the punk beats he plays in a heavy metal way,” says Walker on a quick break from his ten-hour day tracking vocals in the studio. “This may come out being one of our more heavy sounding records, or more metal sounding record.” "

don't worry, I think the drums will be great. Adler is an awesome drummer, it's just that he's been restricted by his band's music so we could have never heard all of his capabilities. I'm now interested in this release solely because of that haha. I'm not a big fan of neither of those two bands, but I like some of their albums, and I'm a drummer myself so yea.. really interested in how will this turn out
