Mike Portnoy started to take them in an overly cheesy direction though, but now he's gone...the new album has some of the best DT songs I've heard (on the backs of angels, bridges in the sky, breaking all illusions are all incredible and up there with my all time favorites by the band)

this man obviously hasn't heard images and words. sure, dream theater maybe some of the most technical musicians, but they do what they do, and do it damn well. it seems that some people here aren't fans of either bands so why comment? i love dream theater deeply, every one of them excel in what they do and many songs such as "the best of times" has real emotion. maybe because they write about fantasy ideas is why this person says there is nothing to like about them but you can't doubt that they don't have a huge fan base, with material that is emotional and technical at the same time.
