Ringo Rejects Vatican Apology

2010-04-15 by PuddlesPuddles | 65 Comments
Recently, the Vatican has made a movement to "forgive" The Beatles for John Lennon's statement claiming the band was "bigger than Jesus" in 1966.

L'Osservatore Romano, The Vatican newspaper, published an article (sanctioned by Pope Benedict XVI) in which they forgave Lennon's statement along with praising The Beatles' music as "beautiful" and describing the band as "a precious jewel".

Ringo Starr has dismissed the Vatican's apology saying, "Didn't the Vatican say we were Satanic or possibly Satanic? And they've still forgiven us? I think the Vatican, they've got more to talk about than the Beatles."

no one stops to realize that John Lennon was right. It probably killed him to half-heartedly repeal a complete and utter truth. In 1966, there were far less people on the planet who believed in Jesus than those who had heard The Beatles' music. The Vatican cried like a bitch because someone more popular was making true evaluations.

So yeah, go fuck yourself Jesus.

Lol, you're a fucking idiot.

Yes they should address the pedophilia issue, they've been making excuses for centuries (there are documents, older then the New Testament, that link priests to child sex abuse).

I suspect this apology was one of those "we should probably do this at some point" kind of things, and they've finally gotten around to doing it. Its just a few years too late.

The best vatican news this week is that Dawkins has filed a pretty massive suit/case to have Pope Benedict arrested as soon as he steps for in Britain for crimes against humanity.

Sure, it won't really happen, but if it actually did, that backlash would be astronomical.

and to my best knowledge an apology is the opposite of forgiveness
its more like the church are asking for an apology by saying "we forgive you". which is irrational at this point

^He's got a point. I'm a big believer in being able to change your mind, but the Church steadfastedly refuse to do that on so many things that they might as well keep it going on all fronts.

I agree with eclectic, this was bound to happen sooner or later...being a Catholic I believe the church has much to work on, however, there is never anything in the media about what the church has already done or the progress it has made against the pedophiles, in yet there is plenty of it..it only takes some to ruin it all for the rest I suppose

hey I can take newspaper clippings and talk about the Church too! This was silly, also the strange thing about this is that Lennon never really said that in the first place. It was taken out of context by the magazine (or radio-show?) I mean he said it, but it was more like, "some of our fans are just insane, they act like we're bigger than Jesus."

Also:

Lisa: You didn't make the same mistake as the Beatles and say you were bigger than Jesus?
Homer: It was the title of our next album.

Why is it silly? If some one says something about me, it's not silly to comment on it, I don't care if it is a news paper clipping.

Whoa, why is this titled Ringo Rejects Vatican Apology? I can see no apology mentioned in this article, an apology and forgiving someone is far different. Hence Ringo's response, he probably doesn't feel like there is anything to be forgiven for. I'd also like to add that the Roman Catholic Church has over 1 billion members, and is one of the largest, if not the largest, organizations in the world. It's hard to deal with stuff when you're that large, like putting an end to pedophilia.

And that AIDS thing was taken way out of context by Captain North, it was that they wanted abstinence promoted instead, it fits their doctrine that way, and would be the most effective solution, also extremely unlikely.

And I just wanted to add for Dev518, we as people are also taught to forgive one another and love one another, the Catholic Church took the Jesus comment as a personal insult against there beliefs and saviour, hence the need for them to forgive the Beatles for the comment and why their music is also lovingly praised in the article.

Yeah, I noticed that as well.

That may be true, but ignoring the problem, or outright denying it exists, is not going to help much.
