Not that difficult to understand really. Both bands lyrics rely on juvenile, mindless sloganeering.

Both band use similar simple imagery to get their point across. The difference is that RATM is trying to get a worthwhile point across while limpbizkit is to music what fratboys are to Obama (stupid, and in the real scope of things very useless).

If unthinking 'rebelliousness' that sounds like it was written by a teenager is your thing then RATM do the job well. And having seen them live, de la Rocha's rhetoric gets old real quick. He's been saying the same thing for years and there doesn't seem to be much thought behind his politics. And this has to be said yet again: they're on a fucking major label.
I was more impressed with what Tom Morello had to say at a Nightwatchman gig a couple of years ago, even if musically it was pretty dull stuff.

@ MrPoopular

"Both bands have shitty lyrics, that's all i'm trying to get across."

Why exactly? What relevance does RATM have to this news post, and why are you attempting to draw a comparison between their lyrics?

"I'm not trying to troll but people can't act snooty about Limp Bizkit and simultaneously claim that RATM's lyrics aren't borderline retarded as well."

No one made any claims about RATM to begin with. Sorry but that does make you a troll bud.

Inveigh
January 4th 2010
27032 Comments

Whether it was troll-like or not, RATM's faux-political-awareness is at least overblown, and borders on self-parody. As Poopular said -- THEY'RE ON A MAJOR LABEL. How can you fight "the power" when "the power" is signing your paycheck?

And yes, Bizkit's lyrics are worse, but I think the point is that somewhere between 95 and 99 percent of rap-metal lyrics suck ass; so hating on a rap-metal band for having bad lyrics is like hating on the radio for playing Coldplay.

jagride
January 4th 2010

Machineflesh: the original comment about RATM was addressed to the poster above me (Titan50), who is a RATM fan. The reference to RATM's lyrics was made because he was sarcastically quoting Limp Bizkit lyrics. So yeah, shut the fuck up about stuff you don't understand bud.

Inveigh you're confusing me bro.

How does expressing displeasure with the US govt's domestic/foreign policies have any relevance with a band's music label?

Ya maybe it would be self paradoxical if they were being paid by the govt, but they're not... They're paid by the people that purchase their music.

The fact their label is a large multi-national corporation is kinda irrelevant. As for being overblown... haha they're musicians/artists. They have a tendancy to do these kinds of things lol.

jagride
January 4th 2010
2975 Comments

Dude... RATM's rants aren't restricted to the US government. They're consistently spouting anti-capitalist rhetoric to anyone who'll listen, and yet they're on a major label. If you don't see the inherent hypocrisy in this then i don't know what to say. This interests me, so i looked at what the band had to say about it:

Q: How do you reconcile being anti-corporate and being on a major label?

Morello: "Rage Against the Machine sold fourteen million records of totally subversive revolutionary propaganda. The reason why is that the albums were released on Sony and got that sort of distribution.

You have two choices. I admire bands like Fugazi that take the other route. They are completely self-contained and independent. But if you do that, then you have to be a businessman. Then I have to sit there and worry about the orders to Belgium and make sure they get there. That is not what I'm going to do"

Ok, now that is one seriously weak-ass answer. And revolutionary propaganda? Give me a fucking break.

MrPoopular pretty much said it best. But the reason that's a weak-ass answer is because it pretty much sums up what RATM is all about. There is no grey area with them, either you're an anarchy-supporting, capitalism-hating communist or you're big brother/evil empire whatever. Their options are not limited to being completely self-contained/independent or major-label -- there are plenty of respectable indie labels that will distribute records for a band. The problem is that RATM is all about indicting those they deem as "greedy" yet they chose a major label because it gave them the best opportunity at making millions.

There's just something a little ridiculous about a band with borderline socialist beliefs (that's VERY outspoken about it -- although they never really propose any actual solutions, they just talk about what they don't like and it's all surface-deep) that's making millions of dollars for themselves on large major label.

machineflesh
January 4th 2010
37 Comments

They signed with Epic 'before' their 1st album release 20 odd years ago. Lyrically it was entirely political. I take your point, but burning them for not changing labels before they matured as people and expanded the scope of their music is pretty harsh.

And you're basically throwing a blanket across any band/artist that speaks out about social inequities yet attains some level of financial success, whether they're with a major label or not.

But anyways, being a RATM fan I was only annoyed at them being lumped in with Limp Bizkit lol.

Inveigh
January 4th 2010
27032 Comments

It's understandable that a RATM fan would be offended at them being mentioned with the L-I-M-P --- I get that. RATM are still superiour, but their lyrics aren't as deep or meaningful as their reputation would suggest.

Also, I'm not really annoyed that they speak out about social inequities and attain financial success; I'm more annoyed that they speak out against capitalism in songs they're using to profit FROM capitalism. It's just a little hypocritical and makes them seem like phonies (not sayin' they are, just kinda sayin').
