Billy Corgan Regrets Break Up

2009-12-11 by Observer EMERITUS | 30 Comments
In a recent interview with Spinner, Billy Corgan has admitted that he regrets breaking up Smashing Pumpkins in 2000.

"Breaking up the band was a mistake because I think it broke trust with the audience. You had an audience that was very invested in that idea -- whether they were invested in the people or the idea or the songs, I don't know. Like a relationship that you break off from and then try to pick back up, it's never quite the same. It doesn't mean it can't be as good, but it has to be different. That beautiful original feeling got lost in the interim of being away. If we had said, "We just went away for seven years," it would have been similar, but somehow breaking up, there's a violence to it."

The interview also details some of the reasons behind the unique creation of the band's upcoming release:

"I've never been comfortable with the idea that you work for a couple of years just to come up with a pile of 12 songs and that becomes the album. What I like about the idea of recording the songs one at a time is I'm always in the moment with the song. I'm hoping it will raise the quality of the songs that I release so that every song is important to me. Hopefully the audience will feel that way too."

Billy Corgan thinks Billy Corgan is much more important than Billy Corgan really is.

Billy is still a badass IMO just for writing Siamese Dream.

btw, D'arcy and James both had the opportunity to rejoin but didn't. Now D'arcy lives on a farm, lolz

Interview seemed legit. I don't understand why everyone hates on him so much. Rivers Cuomo is a different story...

Corgan is so irrelevant to alternative rock. Who really gives a fuck about him anymore, seriously?

Corgan is a douche. Plain and simple.

I really think he's inept, irrelevant, and indifferent. If you want your fanbase to stop bitching, it's quite simple, do it once on this album and you'll have instant success. Bring back the buzzsaw guitar, scream, and stop singing like a fag.

I will, the Smashing Pumpkins are my favourite band of all time. Even if it is just Billy Corgan now.

I will
Also, what he says in the article made sense, regardless of how many people say "he sucks what a douche".

She used to be really pretty. Then she consumed a life-time supply of drugs in a few years and went the Courtney Love way. I saw a recent photo of her a few days ago (from around 2007-2008) and she looked hideous.

I remember seeing something where Billy Corgan said that radio stations should have to pay the artists for playing their songs. That's when I finally lost respect for him.

Billy Corgan is a nice fellow.

Not from what I've read. Apparently he's a control freak in the studio and an ignorant bastard to work with. It probably would have done him some good to take more peoples ideas to heart and less of his own. Remember Zeitgeist? *Shutters*

Pretty much every good band has been run by a dictator or two. Case in point the Beatles, then they let Ringo have a few songs and look how those turned out. Last I checked 4 excellent albums in a row all driven by Corgan's ideas isn't too bad. Also of note the last of those 4 albums which is seen as the least successful was the album where he started letting the band help write more songs, so that throws a spanner into the works. Zeitgeist was a fine album, but people have some ridiculous belief that they understand the creative process better than Billy. Looking at a lot of the posts above you'll see my exact point, he's writing a new album, released one track (which was a good track) and he's getting a bunch of bullshit from people who probably haven't even heard that one track yet. Even if they have they're running down everything before it's been released, it's ridiculous.

100 % correct.
In fact zeitgeist isn't that bad, it's pretty good.
Every band has thier heydey, and then as time goes by members leave, experiments are made, and fanbases are divided. It's called growth.

Very fine points ThePalaceOfWisdom but I still think the band would have made better music if Corgan wasn't the Nazis he is.

Zeitgeist was a fine album, but people have some ridiculous belief that they understand the creative process better than Billy.

This is proof that Corgan's selfish creative stance fucked this album up. The album borderlines the worst aspects of nu-metal.
