FrozenFirebug:
basic point: sounds cool
emotional point: squiggly air makes you feel things maybe?
practical point: it's a tool to assist memory
abstract point: makes pretty shapes in brain
true point: to engage in meaningless tribalism over + shitpost on the internet about, thus sating humanity's misguided desires for endless conflict and identifying with various groups and subcultures who absolutely /have/ to be opposed to each other because we are all mentally challenged on an intrinsic instinctive level and don't want to improve because that'd mean actually doing stuff that matters
truest point: to invariably birth limp bizkit

Also, evolutionary point: Playing an instrument demonstrates to potential mates that your brain works and you have the patience and tenacity to stick with something until you become proficient - but most importantly it displays a certain level of manual dexterity ^^

Rise of the Common Woodpile

ArsMoriendi:
music has many applications, but I think the common root is that it exists for the same reason as all art: to help us understand the world around us, in terms of how it emotionally affects us, how it brings us together, how it can reflect on the world etc

JohnnyoftheWell:
earnest contribution um music started as communitarian all-in for ritualised and/or celebrative occasions, tapered into a specialised craft for a(n often) marginalised pocket of specific communities, with its ritual qualities preserved at court and devotional levels, found its situational raison d'etre suddenly expanded with the advent of mass media, and is now largely a product made and bought according to the emotional needs of whoever the hell cares there used to be discrete points to it now there are many many points to it damn
29Dead (US)
Musical Abortions

anode:
for the listener: something abstract to attach to emotionally
for the musician: personal expression (ideally)
30Frank Zappa
Jazz From Hell

DadKungFu:
There's enough of a social capital component to musical consumption to say that collective snobbiness does have its place, most prominently in those horrifying corners of nerd culture where consumption of the "right" product in the "right" way translates to social capital within the social group ie (let's face it) this site
31Morton Feldman
Piano and String Quartet

IsisScript80:
The point of music is... errm... I suppose it's a means of divining some sense of meaning, pleasure, connection or tool for navigating through life.

It's primal... as in, it's literally the first external thing that babies appear to react to in the womb. Powerful stuff.

In terms of this site and what's being talked about towards the bottom end of this thread, it does inspire a need culture (like basically all general things in culture). That's fine... places like this are for the most part, an enjoyable diversion discussing things you like with people (on some level) vaguely like minded, and learning about new things re. the topic. Obviously it can be toxic fuckery too, but that's people and Internet.

37Arnold Schoenberg
The Complete String Quartets

Demon of the Fall again:
Yeah, in all seriousness music is by far the best medicine for dissociating or getting out of my own damn head - so what Hype said. I’d rather focus on that than all the other bollocks going on in the world

occasionally it doesn’t work, but that’s usually a sign the music ain’t all that
38Pierre Boulez
The Three Piano Sonatas

Deez:
Generally to stop me killing every single person around me..or myself.
39Gyorgy Ligeti

DavidYowi:
Sometime before my life ends I want to put out an album, and everytime I sit down to write a song I think about what I would get out it being released to the world. When I think about my favorite records, there’s this feeling of something in my mind clicking into place, not necessarily that I “feel seen” but that it speaks to something I’ve been looking for that my brain has trouble fully articulating. This applies to art in general, but that clicking sensation is what I get out of music, and if I ever release an album I want to invoke that sensation out of someone.
41Naang Naang
Le Ywei Sin Tei Mya

DocSportello:
Funny how airports transmit sound, an endless impasto of humming voices footsteps music engines tearingthroughtheyonder, and indeed at times you’re drawn into a layer, implicated in the rite of passage, a chance conversation or voyeuristic act of witness, and feel at one with the pulse of time; but just as often, these sounds belong to no one in particular, are remote, interstellar, a mere trans-spatial echo of your mind’s own private broadcast. Mandatory navel-gazing
