| Somewhat straightforward in nature, fairly groovy at times, yet the songwriting is clearly a cut or two above the vast majority of thrash out there. These guys know how to add fills and technical flourishes in an effective, natural way, and there's a bit more variety on offer here than you would expect. Shame about the production, the guitars are muddy and kind of buried in the mix, but on the plus side you can hear the bass, and it's definitely worth hearing too! |

| The mid and late 90s saw a lot of Swedish death metal bands transition to a more melodic style - Edge of Sanity, Hypocrisy, Necrophobic and even Dismember. Afflicted's second and final album was also part of that trend, although whether it qualifies as melodeath is debatable at best. While the swedeath chunky guitar sound and production job remain, the vocals have been replaced with triumphant power metal cleans, and the songwriting also takes more cues from trad/power metal. The first two tracks channel Painkiller-era Priest surprisingly well, and you can also hear some Maiden and 80s Manowar on some of the later ones. That said it's somewhat inconsistent and largely lacking the tech/prog inclinations of its predecessor. |

A disappointing failure to adapt leaves this one feeling very dated. 1986 was a watershed
year for speed/thrash in many ways, with a lot of releases pushing the bondaries in terms
of intensity and even progressive/technical tendencies, and this trend would only get
stronger moving forward. So why then, did Agent Steel ignore all that evolution and
serve a record that sounds like it's from '84-'85 instead? Or so I would like to say,
except if you listen to the track "The Day At Guyana" (which is by far the most
interesting here) it's obvious they were paying attention to what other bands were doing
and the potential was there. Frustrating. |

| deadmau5 at his most experimental and creatively unrestrained but not without most of the faults you'd expect from a collection of early works. For better or for worse, ideas come and go at a pace that doesn't really allow them to leave much of an impression. In other words they don't have enough time to develop or progress as songs, which combined with the lack of album cohesion makes the whole thing feel rather undercooked and disjointed. Regardless it's quite different from the house stylings that propelled him to stardom, drawing heavily from IDM, Drum and Bass and some Boards of Canada worshipping ambient/downtempo. As an overall experience though, Get Scraped is by far the superior release of his back catalogue and most likely his discography in general. |

| After roughly 15 years of inactivity following the unfortunate demise of their original and incredibly talented bass player Koh Morota, Doom have returned. Gone is the industrial sound that Fujita flirted with on their 1999 (former?) swansong, and for the most part back is the original Doom formula. More streamlined, sure, and certainly not without some elements of groove/alternative/nu metal here and there, but ultimately it still sounds like Doom - angular riffs, rock vibes, twisting songwriting and of course fretless bass noodling. Speaking of which, of course filling Morota's shoes was always going to be a herculean task, but Takatoshi Kodaira does about a respectable job as possible on the bass. Overall it's not quite as strong or fresh as their classic material but it's hard to see die-hard fans disliking this. |

This on the other hand is utterly trite, mediocre, lifeless. A somehow even more boring take on the late 80s Anthrax sound. Discontinued is a really cool cut, with its funky bass giving it sort of an "alternative metal" feel, but everything else is throwaway, especially the painful ballads. |

Big shame, their first two albums are truly good. |

On the other... what's with the melodic metalcore vocals, bordering on pop punk at times even? The lyrics don't exactly help either. I'm sort of tempted to make a snide Machine Head comparison but let's be real this is still better. That said, "List of Grievances" deserves a dishonourable mention for being the same kind of worthless modern thrash that Exodus have been churning out since the turn of the millennium. |

| Toxic Voodoo is the second album by Fear of God... not that you could tell from listening to it, because it sounds nothing at all like Fear of God. It doesn't even sound like Detente frankly. It sounds like it should be the 3rd or 4th album by a C list Pestilence-and-Obituary-worshipping death metal band, from the songwriting and riffs to even the production. Safe and plodding death metal of the least creative kind. Dawn's vocal performance feels unfortunately tired, less dynamic and more monotonous than her previous ones. Pretty much the only thing saving this album from being a complete and utter waste of time is the bass work by Rob Michael (previously of 80s Maryland-based thrash/USPM act Have Mercy) which has some surprisingly nice moments. And even then it's not much of a save really... bin it. |

| Stick to their first three. This is a step down from their "classic" material to be sure; to what extent exactly, it's hard to say, because the production, mastering and mix are bloody awful. Not only that, but they put a thoroughly uninspired vocal performance front and center. That's what I was going to say initially, but the longer this thing goes on the worse it gets. The band overindulges in utterly unengaging clean interludes, and the couple of "ballady" tracks in the second half feature clean vocals I can only try to describe as a drunken ESL mental patient doing a half assed Nick Cave impression... it's just painful frankly. |
