Eructation The Fumes of Putrefaction (1992-1995)
40 minutes of pure, primo quality old school semi-technical semi-melodic Swedish death metal. You get the three tracks from the excellent 1992 demo, a faster tempo re-recording of one of them AND another 6 previously unreleased original songs. Let's not mince words here, these guys are no Gorguts, they're no Atheist, they're no Grotesque. But their songwriting is easily a couple cuts above most bands in the scene/genre. Of the "new" tracks, Failed Humankind and Ancient Fall stand out in particular.

Forced Entry The Shore
While there are still bits and pieces of what made their second album interesting, for the most part this is a chuggy groove metal affair that drones on and on. Far from terrible, but a step down and then some.

Forced Entry As Above, So Below
More technical, more interesting, more varied. An interesting style of lead guitar for the genre, songwriting that at times reminds of Voivod or Watchtower, occasionally breaking into more of a facetious crossover style with amusing lyrics. An odd record, one of the more interesting thrash releases of the era.

Forced Entry Uncertain Future
Somewhat straightforward in nature, fairly groovy at times, yet the songwriting is clearly a cut or two above the vast majority of thrash out there. These guys know how to add fills and technical flourishes in an effective, natural way, and there's a bit more variety on offer here than you would expect. Shame about the production, the guitars are muddy and kind of buried in the mix, but on the plus side you can hear the bass, and it's definitely worth hearing too!

Death Angel Relentless Retribution
Predictable, safe, trite, shallow, dull, uninspired, boring, repetitive, stale, redundant, obsolete... Generic riffs, generic screams, breakdowns, radio metal choruses with the odd clean vocal... are you sure this isn't Trivium or Sylosis or something? Lifeless, artificial, by the numbers, and it's almost one hour long. Christ this band gets weaker and weaker with each subsequent release.

  • Cygnatti "A Semmi Kapuin..." is quite good... I think! Not sure how to feel about it yet tbh.
