New Red Paintings Track, Tour 2009-02-08 by Jom | 8 Comments | Aussie art-rockers The Red Paintings have a full Q1 2009 on their plate with an anticipated LP, but now they have been handpicked by electro-punk-rockers Mindless Self Indulgence for their forthcoming tour of Australia in April.
Meanwhile, The Red Paintings have been heavily involved with The Sea Shepherd's Operation Musashi, a whale conversation effort (see italics at the bottom of news post).
Aside from helping raise awareness of The Sea Shepherd's whale-saving efforts, the band has altered Midnight Oil's "Beds are Burning" with frontman Trash McSweeney's co-authored re-write, entitled "Whales are Dying" (the other author is Captain Paul Watson, founder of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society).
According to both men, "The recording is an important statement for the Sea Shepherd's Operation Musashi campaign made through song and it is a statement that [we] want the whole world to hear."
The best part about this is the delicious heap of irony that McSweeney and Watson are laying down on Peter Garrett, the lead singer of Midnight Oil. Garrett is an Australian politician - specifically, the Minister for the Environment - who is allowing the Japanese to kill whales in the Australian Antarctic (as McSweeney calls it, "Our own backyard"). Using Garrett's own song against him is very coy.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society are the ONLY non-profit animal rights organization that is actively involved in the protection of sea wildlife. They are currently out at sea intervening with the Japanese whaling ships with the hope of saving whales and stopping the illegal trade altogether. Their previous campaigns have cost the whaling trade millions of dollars, and their recent campaign has successfully prevented the death of any whales.
