BNL Covers Hockey Night in CA 2009-01-12 by Jom | 10 Comments | As we've just about reached the halfway point of the NHL season, a lot of things have become quite evident throughout:
1. The All-Star Game's ballot-stuffing is a joke.
2. Don Cherry is still insane.
3. The Western Conference is still better than the Eastern Conference.
4. There needs to be more fights, man.
5. The iconic theme song from Hockey Night in Canada was purchased by TSN in Summer 2008 after being heard for several decades on CBC.
As you may recall, Canadians flipped out upon hearing CBC's initial statement that they were going to discontinue playing the HNiC theme song (according to one Canuck, "When I was a kid before I even started grade school, I thought the Hockey Night in Canada song actually was our National Anthem;" for another, "The theme song is as much to Canada as hockey itself!").
So, in a nutshell, Canada's answer to America's ESPN purchased the song. To introduce the theme to viewers and rejuvenate interest, NHL on TSN is having Canadian bands cover the song any way they feel fit.

YES to 4
| | | 3 ducks on the starting lineup for the West
| | | I thought CTV purchased it? Then again, I believe they're all the same company. And TSN isn't really Canada's answer to ESPN. Granted, they're now affiliated, but TSN is essentially "the hockey with some other added sports when they feel like it channel".
Lots of bands have been doing this, though. There's a Protest the Hero cover, too. I never thought to post it.
| | | Id like to hear the Protest The Hero cover.
Shame they sold the song
| | | At least the song is still around. It doesn't have the same impact when the new song comes on HNIC, but still, at least its still linked to hockey.
| | | "purchased buy"
| | | #4 is funny because the Hockey News this month had a big feature about how something needs to be done to scale back the fighting.
But you're pretty much right. And this is kind of cool.
| | | this is pretty cool actually.
| | | The Communist Broadcorping Castration (CBC) hates Canada, therefore they decided to not buy the rights to the song like the idiots they are. Don Cherry is awesome.

Yes, that's true. I figured they were all the same but wasn't completely sure since I'm not really fully indoctrinated in the country yet.
Nah, it's a confusing situation. When CTVGlobeMedia started buying everything up, the CRTC occasionally intervened. So in some instances they took over half of a companies stations while letting them retain the rest (see: CityTV/MuchMusic). So I really dont have much of an idea who owns who anymore.
