Brother Dege Passes Away 2024-03-12 by Mad. | 4 Comments | Louisiana blues artist Brother Dege has passed away. A cause of death has not yet been given but it can be presumed to be unexpected considering his planned release of an album this week.
Dege Legg was known for his song Too Old To Die Young which featured in the Django Unchained soundtrack, as well as his bands Santeria and Black Bayou Construkt. He also released a book in 2020 called "Cablog: Diary of a Cabdriver," which chronicled his five years of driving a cab in Lafayette. The memoir recounts his cab encounters, including the grieving parents of a serial-killer victim, a gang of ex-Holiness Apostolic Pentecostals, James Taylor’s band, and a parade of characters.
A statement from label Prophecy Productions on their Facebook page:
"Brother" Dege Legg passed away on Friday, March 8.
Our thoughts and condolences for this tragic loss go out to his family, his band The Brethren, and friends.
Statement from The Brethren:
"Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of our Brother, Dege Legg.
Thank you to the fans around the world,
and our loving community for your support in this hard time.
Please keep the family, band, and friends in your thoughts and prayers.
Thank you for everything you gave to us, Dege. You are dearly missed."
Statement from Prophecy Productions:
"It is with a heavy heart that I convey our sincere condolences to Dege Legg's family, friends, and fellow musicians in his band" writes the label's founder Martin Koller. "I am struck with grief and sadness on hearing about Dege's passing and I know that I am speaking for everybody at Prophecy Productions. In the short time of our recently engaged collaboration, we all got to know this exceptional musician as a particularly gentle, kind, and generous artist. Rest in peace, Brother Dege!"
After deeply searching our hearts, we have decided to proceed with the release of "Aurora" the sixth full-length of Brother Dege - Official, which has been scheduled for March 15, 2024. To the best of our knowledge that is what Dege wanted. We will honor his artistic legacy by making it available to the world.

Not much of a blues guy so I can't really say I've heard any of his music, but he's from my hometown and his death's been all over the local news lately. RIP
| | | This was such a shock. I was obsessed with Santeria when I was a teenager, they still slap. Such a shame this guy never found the audience he deserved and he was taken way way too soon. At least we're getting one final album from him.
| | | I met this guy a few times since he & his band shared a rehearsal space with some friends of mine, had no idea how good his music was when I'd met him outside of knowing he'd been personally picked out by Tarantino for the Django soundtrack
The new tunes are really good as well as the rest of his catalog I've explored a bit since the news. Just a shame we won't be able to hear it live when the rest of the album comes out
RIP
