I was inclined to echo the cries about how this isn't really Pantera, but there are enough bands with only one original member out there who we don't call out for such, and this sounded pretty tight so good on them. Shame they're not heading down under but I can't blame them
This is the equivalent of trying to do a Metallica reunion if James and Lars had died.
This is the equivalent of trying to do a Metallica reunion if James and Lars had died. (2)
Cash grab or not, you know it's gonna draw a huge crowd. And if you're a Pantera fan it's probably gonna be a good time.
I have a ticket to see them with Metallica and I'm pretty excited about it.
I'm gonna see them next June and I'm pretty excited about it as well.
Of course it's not a real reunion and it being marketed as a "reunion tour" is stupid lol, but at this point I don't even care. I'm pumped.
seeing them in august with metallica. think any white wine will be served?
White wine would be sick!🍾
Nazi scum lol. The word has been so diluted and rendered useless by idiots who have no real clue what Nazis actually did. Fuck you.
Watched some YouTube videos — they sound fucking great!
they really do sound incredible. I'd love to see this tour if it gets extended. Nerds who virtue signal online about Pantera are the most annoying, go fight some real nazis IRL instead of complaining on the internet.
Yea if anyone can play Dime riffs with total love its Zakk, its cool that their doing shows for the fans
At this point I would totally see metallica without Lars lol
And buddy Phil might not be a “Nazi” but he’s definitely a racist, so why are you defending that shit?
yeah it's okay to excuse a bit of horrible behaviour because other people behave worse! I agree!
who excused behavior? please quote exactly. thanks.
Phil talks an obscene amount of contentious bullshit and the dimebash incident was inexcusable but there are videos of him hugging black fans, having a jam with black musicians - do you really think a deadset racist or 'nazi' would do this? besides a few drunken on stage outbursts he's never expressed any racist sentiment in interviews or lyrics, quite to the contrary
I'm not defending his outbursts and I think he got the lashing he deserved but I don't believe he's a racist at heart and certainly not a neo nazi
Anselmo sounds surprisingly great. And I highly doubt he's a Nazi-baiting racist. An ignorant "I don't see color!" edge-lord, absolutely.
Even at the peak of my metal phase I never got Pantera.
It just sounds like redneck bro shit with an awful Guitar tone.
I also feel like you can directly draw a line linking them to five finger death punch and avenged sevenfold which isn’t great.
Here's an exceprt from an interview with Phil Anselmo in Metal Hammer UK, June 1998. Take it for what you will, I just find it interesting. Not entirely sure that Phil is the same person here these days, but hmmm.
MH: Pantera have been accused of attracting a redneck audience. Do you think that's true?
PA: I think that a lot of it has to do with being from Texas, for Christ sakes! Coming from a southern attitude, our first album was called "Cowboys from Hell"! Here we are! I am from New Orleans, Louisiana, the rest of the band are from Fort Worth, Texas.
MH: Do you think the band epitomise any redneck attitudes?
PA: I don't think about any of that shit. I am just going to be who the fuck I am going to be. I am not politically correct and I don't care, but everyone is full of dogshit and has an opinion about everyone else's life, or the colour of their skin, or where you are from. There are good and bad people in all colours, and it's down to the individual, but it's a shame that there is always a bad apple who ruins the whole fucking bunch. But I blame it on the media a whole lot, as they have nothing better to talk about. If is something that happens every day of the fucking week, and this one time they will single someone out.
50 year olds with confederate flags on the back of their pickups rejoice everywhere
I highly doubt he's a Nazi-baiting racist. An ignorant "I don't see color!" edge-lord, absolutely.
"besides a few drunken on stage outbursts he's never expressed any racist sentiment in interviews or lyrics"
Aside from announcing his true views he holds while intoxicated in front of thousands pretty much shows the real human being you are inside. Not the front you want to express to individuals in record interviews and fan outings etc
@White Noise well, five finger death punch draws there line to them because Ivan Moody is legit just copying Phil. The guitar tone take is pretty wild lol
Also if you were to stand up in the your office at work and shout a bunch of racist things to the people nearby you can't expect them to to defend you and be like "you know, outside of Tuesday when he dropped a bunch of n-bombs he's a pretty swell dude".
"Also if you were to stand up in the your office at work and shout a bunch of racist things to the people nearby you can't expect them to to defend you and be like "you know, outside of Tuesday when he dropped a bunch of n-bombs he's a pretty swell dude"."
have you ever been in a non-corporate workplace before? people acting like complete assholes saying racist/misogynistic/homophobic shit and getting excuses made for them because they are productive employees is literally the norm
not even trying to defend phil here, but i feel like that take does not reflect reality whatsoever lol
Totally pumped, unfortunately never had the opportunity to see Pantera live, when Phil played some Pantera tracks with The Illegals some years ago it was incredible already, and this will be way more intense. Looking forward to seeing them so much m/
"but there are videos of him hugging black fans, having a jam with black musicians - do you really think a deadset racist or 'nazi' would do this?"
Phil has never done anything so wrong that I wouldn't go see them live. As usual, sputnik users being overly sensitive.
Pretty sure any race or creed is welcomed to these Pantera shows. And they will hear the same material as anyone else. So please, be offended some more in the comment section of Sputnik..
we need Slex itt in order to clearly resolve everyone's issues here.
not really offended, jw why people are so vehemently defending using confederate flags and yelling white power
^ I think it’s also interesting that the word “offended” itself is so often thrown into things at any disagreement, as though it automatically downplays or invalidates what the other person has said (which isn’t to say this is anyone’s intentions, just the vibe I get at times). Even though it could also be argued that either side of any disagreement can be called offended when we’re so loose with it and regardless of the actual feelings involved, all in just having any investment by engaging in conversation or anything else.
Either way, carry on
Having an opinion about Pantera is one thing "they suck, they're not the same without the Paul bros, this is a cash grab". That seems like valid commentary. However, "fuck this nazi" or in other threads "fuck this rapist" are so ridiculous. At this rate, I'm gonna have to pull background checks on every single artist before I can safely have an opinion about their art. As if the vast majority of "art" doesn't come from broken people expressing their life experiences for a living. I should probably start expressing my judgement to every person in society for any and all faults I can muster as well
Some people are just gonna hate you forever if you scream "white power" onstage it's really very simple
I agree with nipplehair. People need to learn to separate the art from the personal lives of the people making it, especially if it happens after they've created a catalog of music. Like I could find out that Chino beats woman and slaps kids and I'd still listen to Deftones music, because I like their music.
And yet he explained it was an inside joke because they were drinking white wine all night. Sounds to me like he was drunk and stupid, but not a "racist nazi". Its just like these people getting cancelled for wearing black face on Halloween decades ago. It doesnt make someone a nazi for being ignorant..
phil sounds like ass these days so its honestly kinda just like one of the OG four lol
Well whether or not you get cancelled depends on your political views. Justin Tredeau has worn black face multiple times and he's adored by the left. Kanye isn't a liberal so he gets cancelled when he says the wrong thing. It's all strategy and no principle.
"Kanye isn't a liberal so he gets cancelled when he says the wrong thing."
That's one thing and another thing is saying that he loves Hitler and Nazis, they are not the same.
“Says the wrong thing”
The man has lost his damn mind.
Idk, I think Phil's vocals sounded pretty good at the reunion show
that's because nipple hairs don't have ears
“Trudeau is adored by the left”
I've heard worse vocals at reunion shows (see Mudvayne)
^ Aw, that sucks. I’d heard they were sounding good, but I haven’t seen them
“Trudeau is adored by the left”
Strength Beyond Strength still a jam
freedom of speech was a mistake: case study #69420 (this thread)
fuck this guy when's the burzum reunion
^ Varg fears mirrors, so it’ll be a while
@MoM Chad's vocals have improved slightly with each show. But I still can't get over the irony of him falling off the stage during Not Falling
i wrote 2 words and yall be replying w paragraphes. if the nazi shoe fits
@Alamo because the nazi, racist bullshit thrown at Phil is old news. Also, because "nazi" is a gross over-exaggeration. It'd be nice to have a discussion without SJW and political bullshit cropping up every 2 seconds
People are hasty to lock others up and throw away the key, yet expect a fair trial if they ever feel they've been unfairly accused
We've surely all had moments where we've said / done things that would lead others to paint us as something we're not especially when drunk or carried away - an inappropriate joke, an insensitive comment when we were thinking out loud - perhaps not at the level of shouting white power and giving sieg heil on stage but there's really no other evidence to suggest that this outburst reflects his beliefs, ands lots of evidence to suggest that it was an unbelievably ill conceived remark which he in his drunken state thought he could get away with because of his reputation as being a politically incorrect asshole.
He was rightly repudiated for it and some won't ever let him live it down but to label him a Nazi is not only wrong but dilutes the potency of the term
I think we’re all losing the plot a little bit. The real question isn’t “is Phil a Nazi?” or “is Phil racist?” or even “is this reunion a cash grab?”
the real question is why in the fuck is Pantera more popular than Down?
I don't care what people say, this sounds killer and I will go to a show near me if they come.
Racist or not, pantera fucking sucks anyway lmao
I'd rather see fake Pantera open for Metallica than fucking Five Finger Death Punch, yikes
^ Best not to.
The only importance came later on with
“ the real question is why in the fuck is Pantera more popular than Down?”
those last 5 seconds of Phil singing Stairway to Heaven are peak boomer shit, fuck this band
@EphermalEternity spot on. you have restored my faith in humanity
Also, Superjoint Ritual is the best between Down and Pantera
Yeah Pantera really went downhill when they changed their sound and released Cowboys from Hell. The panther album is peak Pantera
