Oh wow genre tags is a good shout, there are so many we need lol
|
| |
sweet
|
| |
we need the "Other" genre tag back
|
| |
good luck to all applicants, and HOORAY for the long-awaited inevitable arrival of dedicated krautrock, disco and noise tags
slowcore, new wave and trap also mucho encouraged
|
| |
tags proposed: Glitch, Footwork, Hardcore EDM, Glitch Hop, Ghettotech
|
| |
considered suggesting trap, but realistically we need way more hip hop subgenres than just trap. I'm just not really sure how to approach it
|
| |
the heck is this crap
|
| |
you can't spell crap without spelling rap
|
| |
Yes good luck to all those prospective new contrib and staff writers.
For those on the fence about applying, do so - try your luck. If you don’t put your hand up how are we (mods/staff) going to tell you that you’re what the site needs.
As for new genre tags: oh yay!!
|
| |
definitely apply if you're on the fence, it's worth it!
|
| |

budgcore

|
| |
We need a djent tag bad
|
| |
Just want to say: I love this site and I want to see it grow and grow. This annual post always gets me excited. That said, in honor of Skindred, we need "Raggapunkmetal" added as a genre.
|
| |
I forgot about that band lol
|

What if we also included a ''Find an Album'' search bar?

yah genre tags are cool and so on but don't forget to apply!!!! at least we know for sure the applications will actually happen lel
|
| |
Good luck lads ;)
|
| |
Wow FR33 that's indeed very necessary! Greeat idea 💕
|
| |
I won't tell anyone else how to vote for the tags, but I would urge people give it at least some thought. Don't suggest things that can be easily summarised by simply adding two genres together. Deathcore for instance can just be death metal / metalcore, I see no reason to add that tag (if we're restricted to 5 only).
I'm actually going to think way too long about this, because for me it won't necessarily be based on my own favoured genres (would be nice though), but more about what I feel is genuinely essential.
|
| |
Latin is missing too actually, or is that too all-encompassing/vague/arbitrary? It might be nice to at least add something Latin-y (for perhaps salsa, bossa nova, etc. are all way too specific for Sput).
|
| |
i voted for latin
|
| |
did not have space for Latin, Disco or Krautrock
and i regret :[[[ someone pick em up plz
|
| |
disco and field recordings are the only two genres that are needed
skip the rest @mx

[Delete] Can't believe I completely forgot ABBA, haha... Oh well
|
| |
Really hoping there’s a good tally of people applying for the writing roles. The genre tagging should be a secondary thought.
|
| |
Haha yeah it was kind of hijacked now that this 🥫 of 🪱🪱🪱 was opened...
|
| |
wouldn't have forgotten abba if we had a disco tag
|
| |
okay good point
havey for contrib
|
| |
Genre tags, hell yeahhh!!!
|
| |
i guess ill accept a dungeon synth tag
|
| |
Fully expected that to be a Garas comment
|
| |
'Really hoping there’s a good tally of people applying for the writing roles. The genre tagging should be a secondary thought.'
wouldn't it have been better to separate the two then? People will be interested in whatever they are interested in. Yes, users should absolutely apply if they wish to, but there are probably a relatively small % of us that could / would go for it. The tagging system essentially effects virtually everyone who uses the site, so that was bound to be the more popular discussion point.
just a thought
|
| |
Demon is right this is a mixed genre post
|
| |
Gosh Demon why'd you have to go and use logic and percentage symbols like that. I get it. the writing position isn't for everyone. People just like rating shit etc. Still it's an opinion.
: ]
|
| |
I voted for:
-Disco
-Synthpop
-New Wave
-Baroque Pop
-Trap (don't like it, but hip hop DOES need more tags, right?)
|
| |
I may have taken your 'staff reviewer' designation a little over-seriously there, like you were representing the powers that be with that take (i.e. the ones who may have been able to separate the two), my bad
Perfectly fine having opinions and what not, carry on :-)
|
| |
Vote for "noise" tag, guys. We NEED IT, because "nosie rock" is SHIT.
> Fully expected that to be a Garas comment
Sorry, I'm full of disappointments. :|
|
| |
yes! Same with jazz rap and jazz rock because "jazz" is shit
|
| |
hi garas what is ur fav noise album askingforafriend
|
| |
Steely Dan, early Chicago, early Journey, etc. could definitely benefit from the jazz rock label
|
| |
For sure
|
| |
singer/songwriter would probably change the site the most
|
| |
I voted to REMOVE all genres except rock, pop, metal, and progressive deathstep
|
| |
If only, your question wouldn't be just about mocking me Johnny... that'd be great.
But here is an example: Vomir tagged as "experimental, industrial, drone" is bullshit.
|
| |
"I won't tell anyone else how to vote for the tags, but I would urge people give it at least some thought. Don't suggest things that can be easily summarised by simply adding two genres together. Deathcore for instance can just be death metal / metalcore, I see no reason to add that tag"
While I get where you're coming from demon, I think it's necessary to just add the genre itself rather than just putting "death metal" and "metalcore". It is a genre after all!
|
| |
Voted for:
Progressive Metalcore
Jungle
Screamo
Synthpop
Yacht Rock
As for additions to the site I suggested adding a Singles section, the ability to search for albums, and adding a comment box under artist's page just for fun
|
| |
2022 is my year I can feel it
|
| |
@Steak: ideally that'd be the case yeah, just trying to prioritise here
I didn't know if they would be restricting the no. of new genres to be added (assuming any actually end up being added).
|
| |
i mean in terms of site additions singles would be kinda pointless unless restricted to non-album singles which you could just combine with eps anyway in one category
what the site needs more pressingly is a way to deal with splits and collaborations outside of separate artist pages
|
| |
"i mean in terms of site additions singles would be kinda pointless unless restricted to non-album singles which you could just combine with eps anyway in one category"
Yea I meant that more so as non-album singles because a lot of artists release between album singles that end up nowhere. I'm guilty of just adding those singles to artists under EPs sometimes but I know mods don't like that happening. Agreed on the splits thing tho
|
| |
"I won't tell anyone else how to vote for the tags, but I would urge people give it at least some thought. Don't suggest things that can be easily summarised by simply adding two genres together. Deathcore for instance can just be death metal / metalcore, I see no reason to add that tag"
I get this, but there is currently no way to search for a cross-section of two genres. You can search death metal or metalcore, not death metal and metalcore (as far as I know?????)
Anyways, I voted for:
- Trap
- Synthwave
- Disco
- Latin
- New Wave
I think a case could be made for regional styles... I put Latin in my list, and stuff like J-Rock and K-Pop are big and distinct enough that ppl would search by those genre tags.
|
| |
those really are run of the mill suggestions *giggle*
|
| |
cheeky
|
| |
'I get this, but there is currently no way to search for a cross-section of two genres'
That's actually a fantastic point and something I hadn't initially considered. I was thinking of it more in a situation where you're just browsing and come across the artist, then you need to know roughly what they may sound like at a glance. I thought 'Death metal' + 'Metalcore' served this purpose (for me).
If you were actively searching for new deathcore bands, having the two separate descriptors isn't very helpful considering we cannot 'dual search'. Fair enough.
|
| |
One tag that needs adding is "noise".
|
| |
“ Voted for:
Progressive Metalcore
Jungle
Screamo
Synthpop
Yacht Rock”
Yeah, I was really close to suggesting progressive metalcore as well. As for yacht rock, I don’t think it’s quite accepted or solidified enough as a genre of its own. Most people would consider Steely Dan jazz rock, or consider Doobie Brothers soul-infused pop rock, etc. So far, yacht rock has acted mostly as an umbrella term
|
| |
Chamber Pop
Sophisti Pop
Slowcore
|
| |
electroswing
|
| |
Not getting my hopes up, but I voted for some genres.
I might be the only person that remembers this, but the last time people asked for new genres, mx appeared out of the blue, said "okay," left, and never came back.
|
| |
Throatsinging
|
| |
Jokes aside, I vote for:
- dungeon synth
- disco
- afrobeat
- surf rock
- nu-jazz
Also another thing that'd be cool to have is to add "classical"-like tags also for non-european musical traditions: which becomes handy also when specifying that a band plays rock music with arabic or indian influences
|
| |
"What if we also included a ''Find an Album'' search bar?"
this one is very much needed for anything V/A
|
| |
Oh right another one that REALLY needs to be split:
neofolk
|
| |
@normaloctagon I've already voted there, I'm trying to influence others by reminding them of what to vote for :^)
|
| |
I would like to put my ballot in as the overlord of this site as my dad works at Microsoft and will ban you all if u don’t!!1!1!11!11
|

having literally any south american genre might be tight
|
| |
you mean like, funk carioca?
|
| |
Maybe we should genre tag albums, not artists, as a lot of bands have diverse discographies!
|
| |
That’s asking too much, just go to RYM if that’s what you want
|
| |
Nah but for real, who's applying for contrib/staff?
|
| |
Vote drone metal too so we can get drone out of metal category!
|

How many is Jom going to add? Is it just 5?

-Jom adding 5?-

^fuckyeah, hope you get it!

Put in for deathcore, mathcore, screamo, noise and disco. While I sympathize with adding additional tags for hip-hop and electronic, I feel that too many sub tags would complicate things instead of simplify. It is rather amazing that we don’t have a disco tag.
Also put in that users who’ve rated 2,500+ Albums should be able to rate at .1 intervals instead of the regular .5 intervals.
|
| |
>too many sub tags would complicate things instead of simplify
>mathcore
my sides
|
| |
everyone should apply wooooo i did it too
|
| |
"While I sympathize with adding additional tags for hip-hop and electronic, I feel that too many sub tags would complicate things instead of simplify."
lmao this dude advocating for mathcore/deathcore when we don't even have a trap tag
|
| |
yeah that’s an example of how this will get fucked up
|
| |
it would be nice to get like a 3rd hip hop tag before a 10th metal one
|
| |
All I can do is try; not as knowledgeable with rap/hip-hop and electronic than I am with others, so I played to my strengths.
|
| |
fair but regardless of your taste/knowledge those two genres desperately need more tags
|
| |
If I knew more, I would gladly request such tags
|
| |
‘lmao this dude advocating for mathcore/deathcore when we don't even have a trap tag‘ (2)
I know more about mathcore than trap but I completely agree, people are bound to play favourites here. Some genres are just needed, regardless of your personal taste/perspective. That’s why I will absolutely vote for Disco even if I’m not exactly a massive fan.
|
| |
to me if you can represent a genre (roughly) with 2 separate existing tags, it isn’t as important. Yes it would be nice if we could just have ALL the tags, but we shouldn’t prioritise the ones easily represented by ‘dual tagging’. As someone pointed out it makes it harder to search for a specific genre, so it isn’t perfect, but still.
|
| |
gamelan tag not required, just put "folk" + "djent"
|
| |
math isn’t a genre anyway, a) it’s a subject and b) it’s maths

Had to leave off a lot of additional important ones, but the ones I voted for were:
disco, synthpop, new wave, drone metal, and screamo.
I don't know enough about some of the other main genres that are under-represented tag-wise, so hope others will be able to get some cuts in as well, but what I voted for is what I'd expect to see in the genre pulldown menu that seems to be overtly missing.

lol good one

| |
'lmao this dude advocating for mathcore/deathcore when we don't even have a trap tag‘
There s a grime tag tho, I m so confused
|

yeah bc the tags were added like 80 years ago when trap wasnt as big

@FR33L0RD, I certainly agree with the need to split up classical tags, but I'm not sure if "20th Century (1900-2000)" and "Modern (2000-present)" is the best way to approach this - classical music splits into several strands during 20th century, with impressionism and expressionism - if not necessarily from each other - certainly warranting separation from serialism, with musique concrète and minimalism (already kinda covered with "minimal" tag but with that tag crossing over into minimal techno which I'm assuming it was originally meant for) showing up in later 20th century, and with some composers even trying to continue developing romanticism (e.g. Dohnányi, Korngold, Tyzen Hsiao). And "Modern (2000-present)" feels like a misnomer especially given that postmodernism was already a thing from ~1950 on. And there doesn't seem to be much of new stylistic development since 2000 either, it's mostly a continuation of one of already existing 20th century strands.

Troubadour vs. Trouvére
Discuss.
|
| |
it's either trobador or trouvère but none of your spellings
|
| |
I’ve always known it as troubadour
|

Dad rock

tool would be the first candidates for that tag

|

I did not vote for post-metalcore
|
| |
I'll learn to forgive
|
| |
People saying we need way more hip hop tags but I also just read this entire thread and the only concrete suggestion was trap. What else????
|
| |
Also for a new feature I would LOVE some kind “bookmark albums you want to listen to later” feature. A way to add albums to your wishlist that you could sort by release date, genre, etc. That would be incredibly useful for me
|
| |
"it's either trobador or trouvère but none of your spellings"
I am ashamed.
|
| |
"Also for a new feature I would LOVE some kind “bookmark albums you want to listen to later” feature."
Nice, sput could become a useful little listening log tool.
|
| |
"it's either trobador or trouvère but none of your spellings"
It's Troubadour for the langue d'oc and Trouvère for the langue d'oïl
|
| |
I said discuss.
This is what I deserved.
|
| |
it's trobador in proper langue d'oc spelling, troubadour is langue d'oïl eyespelling of how it's pronounced in langue d'oc
|
| |
What about a dub tag
|
| |
ended up voting for
- afrobeat
- bossa nova
- neofolk
- chamber pop
- harsh noise
figured stuff like disco, new wave and trap would get enough votes on their own
would like to apply for contrib but i need to actually start writing reviews again and focus on new releases, but i've got a ruptured ligament in my hand and can't really type efficiently atm, so maybe one for next year
|
| |
A belated "best of luck" to anyone applying!
|
| |
*Ponders applying for Contrib AGAIN*
*realises his reviews are weeks if not months apart at this point, and mainly for obscure or random albums from decades ago*
...oh. Never mind.
|
| |
Also, less accurate tagging system: Sput or AllMusic?
I vote for Sput, as at least we don't put hard rock and pop-punk bands into the 'pop/rock' tag and metal into the 'rock' tag.
|
| |
Damn sorry to hear about your hand Jas, hope you're healed up asap! I had some fairly mild tendonitis in my wrist last year and it sucked, can't even imagine what a ruptured ligament is like :s
|
| |
Better than Apple music genres agreed
|

"Damn sorry to hear about your hand Jas, hope you're healed up asap! I had some fairly mild tendonitis in my wrist last year and it sucked, can't even imagine what a ruptured ligament is like :s"
kinda feels like you need to click or stretch, but it fucking hurts if you try. limited mobility, kinda burns if i try to type. getting to see a specialist finally in a few days after months of waiting. can't write, can't play guitar, can't play my brand new ps5 it's aids.
at least I live in a country where i don't fall into crippling medical debt because of it
|
| |
"at least we don't put hard rock and pop-punk bands into the 'pop/rock' tag and metal into the 'rock' tag."
Are you suggesting that this is irrational bcus it kinda seems fine to me ngl. Like, what tag would metal go under if not "rock"
Also wowowoww Fs in chat for Jasdevi
|
| |
If metal isn't its own umbrella category ig that's an understandable thing to be frustrated abt but imo it's totally reasonable to treat it as a subcategory of rock
|
| |
I remember when I was a wee lad I would go to the store and rap was listed as "black music"
|
| |
why would you vote for harsh noise when we don't even have noise.
|
| |
I personally think that some types of metal aren't subgenres of rock music
|
| |
I agree, some are subgenres of pop
|

Hi, I'm curious to know when a decision will be made as far as the Writer Applications go.
|
| |
It takes some time to field the applications and allow for discourse, but without speaking for Jom, you can likely expect decisions to be made this week or early next.
|
| |
oh boi!
|
| |
Can't wait for technical brutal deathgrind to finally be recognized as a genre on here :]
|
| |
As if, clearly we're going to be adding post-avant jazzcore and progressive dreamfunk
|
| |
Well………um
|
| |
I appreciate whoever nominated Sowingcore as a new genre tag, but I think it might come in *just shy* of the required number of votes ;-)
|
| |
When do we find out about the tags that got enough
|
| |
"progressive dreamfunk"
Yeah, I second that one. Underrated genre!
|
| |
Excited to see how the staff/contrib rosters shake out
|
| |
Do you know how long it’ll be until everything’s announced?
|
| |
I am unsure past what Sowing mentioned a few posts up
|
| |
Gotcha. Hopefully soon
|
| |
I'm certainly anxious to see if I qualify to join the ranks.
|
| |
Same, lol. And I hope you make it too, you're an awesome writer
|
| |
wows I saw people petitioning for genres but I completely missed this post. big rip
I was actually looking forward to applying this year ;__;
|
| |
Yeah I wish I had voted, folk metal really needs to be a tag
|
| |
Folk metal before technical Slavic bluegrassgrindcore? Absolute nonsense!
|
| |
now that you mention slavic, I really should've voted hardbass
|
| |
misread that as "hardass"
|
| |
hardcore x butt rock = hardass?
|
| |
either way, that sounds 'tight'
|
| |
