Flaw guitarist fired for plagiarism

2019-10-09 by DatsNotDaMetulz | 38 Comments
US nu-metal/hard rock group Flaw have this week fired guitarist/bassist Tommy Gibbons after a month of revelations that music from the group's latest album was plagiarised from various YouTube musicians.

After the issue was first raised, vocalist Chris Volz issued an apology, pledging to "deal with the matter" while seeking to make peace with those whose music was stolen. It later emerged that Gibbons had spoken on social media about a song he "wrote", which was one of the stolen tracks in question. One of the songs, however, was licensed properly for use on what turned out to be "Conquer This Climb", which received a music video courtesy of late night TV host Stephen Colbert.

It is not currently known if the band, or Gibbons, face any legal action.

*badumtsss*

There's so many levels to this.

a). There are random youtubers out there writing and recording full on generic nu-metal songs.

b). Flaw is so creatively bankrupt that they're ripping off unknown youtubers' songs wholesale.

c). Unknown youtuber actually owned up to the fact that he had written the riffs on those Flaw songs.

d). Somehow Flaw haven't yet thought of just hiring the unknown youtuber to be their guitarist.

Some of the comments on the original instrumental are pretty hilarious including this gold one:

"I was unaware of this, but I've been using this for over two years. It was on my band's first album. Is there a way we can work a deal so you can get the proper credit? I had no idea it was a royalty free track. Super bummed that I was lied to about the music being original."

How does this even happen

Disappointed there’s no comments about the fact this band’s whole career has been spent plagiarizing other D rate numetal bands

A flawed genre beyond repair. Just let it die in piece and never talk about it again

Not true. Their first album Through the Eyes is one of the few nu-metal albums that's still listenable. Their second, Endangered Species is solid too. After that they turned to dog shit, though true.

It does lol. Give it a listen though, there are actually some really good impassioned songs on it.

^Through the Eyes is one of my favorite "nu metal" albums. Don't get the hate for this band.

I mean, I get the hate for that guitarist but not the other members or their music. I've always liked Flaw more than most other bands in that genre.

Endangered Species is where it's at. It's such a sorrowful, anguished record. "Consequences of Emotion" and "Keep Me Behind" are stellar too, somehow got left off the album.

That said, this whole situation is laughable. The level of replication, down to electronic whooshes and whatnot, reeks of not at all accidental plagiarism.

Chris Volz is a good vocalist and decent lyricist. He needs to find better musicians to play for his band. Both as far as someone who won't plagiarize, and people who can actually write good riffs. Not sure what happened to the original lineup.

Also, this song isn't one of the stolen songs. Chris had permission to use it. Tbh he should just pick up a guitar and write himself since the people he's chosen to do the job haven't been very good.
