Oomori Seiko x Ging Nang Boyz 2019-06-03 by dimsim3478 | 4 Comments | Japanese pop heroine Oomori Seiko is toasting to five years since her major label debut with a year-long celebratory campaign entitled "Super Singer 5th Anniversary Handmade Miracle 5!". Today, Oomori delivers the third installment in the campaign: "Re: Re: Love", a collaborative single with actor and Ging Nang Boyz frontman Mineta Kazunobu. Having been an avid fan of theirs since high school, Oomori has made no secret of her enthusiasm for Ging Nang Boyz over the years: in addition to wearing their merch, covering their songs, and playing a double-headlining show with them last year, she was interviewed by Mineta in 2014 as part of the promotion for her first major label single.
Mineta wrote the music for "Re: Re: Love" and also provides vocals and acoustic guitar, while Oomori wrote the lyrics. The pair also star in the 10-minute-long music video together, which is available on YouTube now. The single will be released on CD next week with three different editions available.
Oomori kicks off her "Handmade Shingaia" tour tomorrow, which will see her playing through all 47 prefectures of Japan. Head here for info on upcoming shows: https://oomoriseiko.info/live/ She has yet to announce the two remaining installments in her 5th anniversary campaign.

This is fun n all, but I'm very much feeling celebratory collaboration vibes rather than new material hype. Hope the campaign/tour is a total blast and that she picks up a ton of new fans, but then takes a moment before throwing another album together; this and Justadice don't quite scream peak Seiko imo
Also, I think the last of her tracks that she didn't write herself was Positive Stress, which was conveniently another of my non-favourites (although this is considerably better tbf)
| | | wasnt feelin the song that much at first but after like 10+ spins i've really fallin in love with it. i think the reasons for my initial misgivings were similar to when i first heard jeff rosenstock's worry; the melodies and songwriting on that record felt a lil too familiar and unoriginal at first, like i'd heard it all before. but since i couldnt actually remember the exact songs that they supposedly sounded like, i came to primarily associate those melodies and songwriting with worry rather than some other songs that i only faintly remember.
same goes with this song. at first, i was like "yea i've basically heard these melodies before on other songs" but as i keep replaying it over and over, it's really digging its way into my brain while my tenuous memories of other similar songs are subsiding. that is, it's sounding more "original" and unique now than when i first heard it.
plus the performances are fucking glorious and exuberant and the arrangement is so detailed and the tone is perfect (esp. on that fucking guitar solo my god). this is like the kind of shit that i want GNB to be doing rn. people were saying last year after the GNB x Seiko live video that Seiko's band did GNB better than the current lineup of GNB, and i didnt rlly think that was true at the time, but this single has totally won me over (lineup on this single is the same as that live vid from last year, including the drummer from LTS).
| | | I've tried to give this a shot, but I just can't get into it. It just feels flat, even the chaotic climax just feels like its missing something. Don't have a lot of familiarity with GNB, but it does feel like their styles mix pretty well. This song just feels a bit like they added all the right ingredients for a seiko track, but didn't really properly bake it.
Video is fun though

might be because seiko didnt write the music. at a very fundamental level, its pretty different from what she usually does and much more in line with what GNB do.
