Glenn Branca Dead at 69

2018-05-14 by Zignetha Feltskug | 14 Comments
American avant-garde composer and guitarist Glenn Branca has died, his wife and frequent musical collaborator Reg Bloor announced on Facebook. He was 69 years old. According to Bloor, Branca “passed away in his sleep last night (May 13) from throat cancer.”

Glenn Branca was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1948 and moved to New York City in 1976. Branca released his first solo album, Lesson No. 1, in 1980. The next year, he issued his debut and most acclaimed album, The Ascension. Since then, Branca composed guitar symphonies and worked with bands like Sonic Youth.

I know everyone knows Branca for the Ascension, but the symphony series albums are just as good. One of the greats for sure

Rest in peace, kind sir. Thanks for the music.

Some parts of Glenn's compositions sound like proto-black metal. In fact, when I first heard black metal, I thought that they must've been influenced by Branca.
