Probably one of the most influential and amazing drummers of all time. I'm not a die-hard Rush fan but to deny this guy's level of influence in the rock world would be an absolute injustice. Hope he's able to have a good rest of his life doing whatever else he likes.
| |
At least he ended on a high note! That last live album was pretty solid, and Clockwork Angels is probably my favorite Rush record since Moving Pictures.
| |
damn
| |
Sad day, but I'm also glad to have seen their last tour together. Peart is the man.
| |
Clockwork Angels is incredible, with The Garden being the perfect swan song. Honestly this seems like the best move for him, the guy is suffering from medical problems for insanely complex drumming for 40+ years. Retiring is probably the best option, and it doesn't necessarily mean he won't keep making music in some way or another.
| |
well shi
| |
The dude rules hard, legend will keep on rocking!! lml
| |
damn, always sad to see a drummer have to quit because of tendinitis. and the fact that it's peart quitting makes it even more depressing.
| |
Uggggghhhhh I was already super disappointed I missed them on the R40 tour and now I'll never forgive myself fuck
| |
It's not a sad day, he's 63 he's still young believe it or not! He's got a life ahead of him still and I wish and hope he can enjoy it to the max!! lml >:]

Sad to see my favorite drummer step away from the kit behind my favorite band of all time. Yet at the same time, I commend Peart for all blood, sweat and tears he put into his craft. Rather than fear the beginning of the end of such an unbelievable band, we should instead be grateful for all of the classics Peart and company have given us. Man deserves to live the rest of his life in happiness as he sure has help me do so with the music he gave us alongside Geddy and Alex. Hell, if it weren't for them, I doubt I would have gotten so involved in music like I am now. Kudos Neil!

WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN????

Thanks for your brillant drumming for that brillant band, The Professor!!!

Sad to hear, incredibly influential and a great drummer.

the definition of a master of his craft
| |
sweet theyve never come to australia and now wont even be worth it if they do
| |
fuck
| |
he's done all he can, time to ride out into the sunset. if anyones deserved it it's him
| |
I never got to see the band live, but I respect Neil's decision on this. He's been with the band for 41 years, so wanting to retire after that length of time is completely understandable.
| |
Great drummer, better person, got to live out his dream for forty-one damn years. That's a hell of a life, and he's still got so much more ahead of him.
| |
Absolutely !!
| |
I'm gonna miss his drumming.
It's gonna be hard thinking of Neil retiring, but he has such respectable reasons for it. What a guy.
| |
the right thing to do at least, ended on his highest note and had very few low ones

Forever a legend.
| |
Godbless this fucking hero
| |
Rush might as well join him in retirement. Who in the world could possibly replace Neil Peart in any capacity? Besides being their drummer he is also their principle lyricist.
| |
danny carey playing for rush would be cool
| |
Thankful I got to see them live a decade or so ago, but I wish I would have caught them on the 40th
| |
Sad to hear, yet completely understanable decision. It's a damn shame that I didn't get the chance to saw them live. Thank you Neil for creating 40 years of awesome music.
| |
While this is quite sad to hear, I truly believe that Neil completely deserves his retirement.
| |
Bad buzz, but what a career, will be remembered as one of the greatest drummers of all time. Hope he enjoys his retirement.
| |
can't see how they will continue without him, have hopes though
neil is a living legend, no doubt about that
| |
Respect to him, good luck in the future.

serious [2] to this.
| |
One of the best players around.
| |
The band have to finish surely?
| |
yeah i can't see rush continuing without peart.
| |
yeah i can't see rush continuing without peart. He was not only a fantastic drummer, but he also contributed most of their lyrics.
| |
I really don't see Rush continuing with live shows without Neil, I'm sure it wouldn't sit comfortably with a lot of the fans, not to mention Geddy and Alex.
| |
Good to end on a high note
| |
Damn, one of the greatest.
| |
I definitely respect his decision.
| |
great drummer, only redeeming part about rush
| |
^^^^ Whoa now.
| |
Don't mind him he's one of the seven or eight autists who gets absolutely creamed on a regular basis on the forums.
Let's keep this thread respectful
| |
I mean, I'm not even a huge fan of Rush, but the entire band is ridiculously talented.
Also: THE DRUM SOLO OF LIFE.
| |
I've been going to rush shows since 77.
| |
You have beeng going to Rush shows for longer than I have been alive. And I thought I was one of the older users on this site.
Good on ya!
| |
"Don't mind him he's one of the seven or eight autists who gets absolutely creamed on a regular basis on the forums. "
lmao fan boy much? drop off the earth
| |
Rush will definitely cease to exist as a band but I think the point of singling out Peart's retirement is that Geddy and Alex will still do their own stuff.
| |
It has been coming for a while, if were up to him would of been 10 years ago.
| |
Read this last night, sad times.
| |
I swear to God if Mike Portnoy replaces him...
| |
^Hahaha I was thinking the same thing about Portnoy.
| |
I love how the title of the article is "Rush Drummer Retires", as if Neil Peart isn't a household name in music.
| |
He had a hell of a run, godspeed. I'm facing the end sooner because of a medical condition, so I can relate. Time to go to school I guess.
| |
never got to see them live :'(
| |
obviously one of the best drummers ever rip in peace
| |
So, I'm gonna assume Rush is done now, they surely can't go on without Neil Peart?
| |
ay geddy lee just said this is incorrect tho
| |
Have an awesome rest of your life Neil! You have one hell of a career behind you and you should be beyond happy with yourself for inspiring people with influential music. Well done and you deserve some retirement
| |
Yeah geddy said this was taken out of context.
| |
Nothing Geddy said really pointed to this being incorrect. He basically just said he thinks he just may mean touring, which is a definite. But as far as the bigger picture is concerned they're gonna get together as friends and talk about it.
| |
Farewell Neil, you were the greatest drummer in rock history, your legacy will always remain. Your retirement is well deserved, enjoy it :-)
Will jam Xanadu now!
| |
jammin clockwork angels rn m/
| |
I don't knew that. I'm very sad about it. But we can't do nothing against that type of disease. The only think I can say is thanks Neil for your great contribution in the world of music. We all will never going forget you, man.
| |
This sucks
| |
What a bummer. At least what material he left us with is vast and of the utmost quality.
| |
jammin Bowie in honro
| |
the whole band should just retire. how do you replace him?
| |
So sad, he achieved a legend status in rock; literally every drummer wishes to be as good as him
| |
Glad I saw them live now. Good for him. CA was a good album to finish on. Here's hoping Geddy and Alex don't want to do an album with an inferior drummer.
...someone please stop Mike Portnoy from joining Rush!!!!!
| |
"Rush drummer retires"
ah, that guy. what's his name again
| |
prob easily replaceable they could just pull in some Joe off the street
| |
Introducing: Rush with Mike Portnoy
| |
Well, Mike Portnoy is objectively skilled as hell, he could replace Neil and he would play the songs without any problem, but it would just look so wrong
| |
Rush will be back......may take some time.....but will perform again live
| |
After all these years it's technically not Rush without him. No way they would replace him with Portnoy.
| |
After all these years it's technically not Rush without him. No way they would replace him with Portnoy, even it it's just for a few shows.
| |
Guys, this is a decision of the other two band members. Of course there is some other great drummers that can replace him, like Portnoy. However, this is a very difficult decision for the band. Neil is simply a drum legend. And they can put an end in the band, as Led Zeppelin did. It's all a matter of a very well thought decision by the remaining members.
| |
Asked whether Peart's quote was taken out of context: "I think that's absolutely right. That's their job. Talking about something when there's nothing to talk about." ...
-Geddy Lee
| |
I think Geddy should take the reins and start to make the music and the lyrics. I read his lyrics and are a bit cleverer than Neil's
| |
even Geddy would laugh at that^
| |
Have only heard of some of their older records. I guess it's time to listen to their discography all the way through. Wish him all the best!
| |
I know, still I hate how in interviews he makes clever answers about why he haven't write any lyrics since "signals"....I thought "different strings" was brillant
| |
absolute legend
| |
Sad as hell but what a guy and what a drummer, never got to see Rush live but enjoy your retirement man.
| |
Travis Barker has been announced as Peart's replacement
| |
*from touring
| |
He just doesn't get the Rush he used to from it.
| |
well lets not Rush to conclusions :D
| |

did I miss where people said it wasn't?
| |
so I just heard he didn't retire he just doesn't want to tour anymore cuz he's fucking old as fucking fuck
| |
Rush will NEVER perform live without Neil Peart
| |
not as "rush" no
| |
we'd take a Lee/Lifeson project now wouldn't we?
i still don't see them playing live together with another drummer.....geddy has mentioned it numerous times that he wouldn't want to do it without 'the other two guys'
you can put your house on it that a Geddy Lee solo project will surface at some point, with the same exact lineup from My Favorite Headache (especially with Ben Mink in the mix in recent times)
| |
holy fuck rip
| |
???????
| |
Even if he's not actually retiring, it still sucks that he can never tour with the band anymore. They actually played at my town like 2 years ago and I'm gonna regret not going forever now...
| |
Rush has been going nonstop since Vapor Trails and he wants his rest. Watch what happens after a 4 year period of no activity. A quick 2 week stadium tour you say? Things change man....
They'll be back.
| |
there needs to be a kill post itt
| |
He's wanted to retire for years, but was afraid to move back home to Canada with that fuckhead Harper in power. Now he feels it's safe to return for good and is doing so.
| |
geddy is saying he is only retiring from touring. even though its kind of a relief that he isnt completely gone, but still retiring from touring sucks as well. what a legendary drummer.
| |
your comment seems to say that geddy is retiring from touring, and not peart
| |
"He's wanted to retire for years, but was afraid to move back home to Canada with that fuckhead Harper in power. Now he feels it's safe to return for good and is doing so."
lol
| |
I vote Portnoy in. He lost his band, and he's a bigger Rush fanboy than anyone here.
| |
no one can replace peart. no peart no rush
| |
