Doda facing blasphemy charge

2010-05-16 by Kaleid | 62 Comments
Polish pop star Doda Elektroda could serve up to two years in jail after prosecutors charged her with insulting "religious feelings of both Christians and Jews".

The allegation is based upon an appearance the singer made on TV last year, when she said "It is hard to believe in something written by people who drank too much wine and smoked herbal cigarettes."

No stranger to controversy, Doda has made many conservative Catholics in Poland uncomfortable after swearing live on air, and, as a member of the band Virgin, releasing the pop video Dżaga, which involved her future husband, a camcorder, a bed, and cream.

If found guilty, Doda could be sentenced to up to two years in jail, or could receive a fine.

I don't think the UN can intervene with a country's legal sytem. If she broke Polish law then she is liable for prosecution, even if it's for something as ridiculous as this. She's be better moving somewhere that has less archaic ideas. Fucking retarded Catholic bastards.

I'm Catholic and I consider this to be fucking ridiculous, everything about Poland is as archaic as it gets, the right to free speech should override any fucking law set down by a government especially in such a country of many faiths
Also they're in the music business so pretty much anyone can nab anybody in the business because once you make it in the business you become insane. Its how it goes

There's no doubt she's an idiot, and she'll probably lose a few dozen fans for this, but jail time for not having political correct-ness is going overboard.

I'm Polish and yes, Poland is about 90% Catholic so it is not terribly surprising that this happened... the same would happen in Italy where Christianity runs rampant. Personally I am an atheist.

They can take this to the ECJ, everything'll be fine.

My understanding of the European Convention of Human Rights is that if she is convicted she may be able to appeal. Same with Nergal.

Oh and I'm not doubting that it could possibly be a publicity stunt.

And yeah idiot if you knew anything about how legal matters work you'd know there the governments in forming laws try to mirror the public morality and beliefs in the form of statutes. i.e. The UK Government making homosexuality in the 60's.

I'm sorry but if you can't see how archaic it is to suppress someone's beliefs and charge them with what is essentially blasphemy, and how this reflects negatively on the country, then I won't waste my energy arguing with you.

This is not the middle east, Poland is apart of the EU which is a liberal state.

well this time it was on TV so thats probably why

and no offense but how fucking slow is the Polish judicial system? it took them 2 years to finally realise Nergal had ripped a bible in half (oh the horror!) and now 1 year later they noticed that somebody had an opinion on tv lol

2much: you are stupider than I thought...

Have you ever heard of dated laws? The same applies in this country... our Bill of Rights pertains to militia laws yet do we have those anymore? No... why is it still there then? Because it reflects the population's "beliefs" about armed militias?

Also, the government in Poland creates laws reflecting the public's interest as much as Congress does here in the US, same with the judiciary and even less so with civil law.

I'm a proponent for free speech, but if YOU don't realize that the actions of the government do not accurately reflect the consensus of the nation then you are as dim as a 2 watt bulb. That would be like someone calling the entire populous of the United States fucking idiots all because Obama decided to bomb Nebraska - makes no sense, neither does your logic.

i'm sorry but there's absolutely zero logic behind this being a 'publicity stunt'. first of all she's being convicted and may have to spend some time in prison or pay a hefty fine. what good are either of these things to her record label?

and secondly, how is this kind of publicity good for her at all in an overwhelmingly Christain country?

2muchket!
May 16th 2010

ugh you fucking idiot let me take this step by step

Have you ever heard of dated laws? The same applies in this country... our Bill of Rights pertains to militia laws yet do we have those anymore? No... why is it still there then? Because it reflects the population's "beliefs" about armed militias?

Yeah there are tonnes of dated laws I know of, which aren't enforced today, and it'd be a logistical nightmare to repeal them all.

Also you're confused as to how law is made. In common law countries such as the U.S and the U.K precedent is established, which civil law bears an equal footing in as much as criminal law, contract, employment, environmental etc. Which of course supplements statutory and delegated legislation. So let me correct you there on your obvious weak understanding of how law is put into force.

And I see no problem with drawing negative connotations, if the democratically elected politicians act in such a ridiculous manner.

If the polish state aren't acting in the general populations interests, as you say, then that strikes me as a pretty poor form of government.

Haha. Every publicity is good publicity, my friend. Besides, she's going to pursue her career abroad. I made a small research and this seems to be true (though I still have my doubts). The other case is that she often doesn't really know what she says in interviews. And I've really heard much more insulting things from her. On the sidenote, she can sing, but her music and lyrics are so dreadful. Yuk. So, she probably should be convicted for something anyway.
