MGMT Suing French President

2009-03-03 by Athom EMERITUS | 43 Comments
American Indie-Pop band MGMT have filed suit against French president Nicolas Sarkozy, accusing him of using their hit song "Kids" without their permission. Sarkozy used the song in a series of online videos and at his party's national congress. Sarkozy offered the band one Euro as a gesture of good will after he was made aware of the song's unauthorized use at his party's convention, an offer that the band's lawyer remarked as, "...Disrespectful of the rights of artists and authors. It is insulting." Furthermore, 53 Euros ($90) had initially been paid to gain use of the song in the videos, but the band's lawyer claims that it was not sufficient to cover the amount of plays that the video had received.

Busy couple months for musical lawsuits, though this one seems a little screwed. I think I'd be happy with my music being played in such a wide spectrum, but like Chan said, if you can get money for something you did, you might as well go for it...providing this doesn't get too messy/boring/takes up too much news space with countless "developments".This Message Edited On 03.03.09

"Oh, the french president used our hit song in his video... how insulting! We must sue!"
Either they're idiots, desperate for money or racists. Or more likely all of the above :P

or they somehow realised sarkozy is an idiot.
I'd sue any government any day if I was in their situation. except North Korea or the US probably, too much risk involved there.

Sarkozy may be an idiot, but come on, I'd be HAPPY if it was being used in his campaign anyway. Tbh, I'd probably laugh at the 1 euro thing. But I guess money's money...

Fuck this band. So, they were paid to have their song used in the video but now that it's been played so many times they want more money. They obviously had already agreed to a sum and now they're trying to get more? Also, they're trying to sue because the song was used at a convention? Music is played all the time at conventions, parties, etc. Imagine if a band could sue you for finding out you played their music at your convention or get-together. I hope they lose. The first band to get beat by the French.

I guess there's no possibility in suing the Russian or Chinese government. it would be too hilarious to be even possible.

if I understood it right, it's not about the song being played at the convention, but because it's on some online videos. I don't have any idea about such judicial stuff, but I guess it's not that far-fetched.

Yeah, but they were paid for the song's use on the online videos, and now that video is getting so many plays the band has decided that it's not enough money afterall. They're also calling its play during the convention "unauthorized", but that's just bullshit too.

The 1 Euro thing was such an arrogant gesture that he probably deserved to get sued.

Not really. The band was already being douchebags for trying to renegotiate the money paid to them for using the song in the video and then they try to sue for the song being used during a convention. Come on. It's like leaving a waitress change as a tip after she has been a dumb bitch the entire night... it's supposed to be arrogant and insulting.

I don't agree with them suing him, I'm just saying that, and you even agreed with me here, it was an incredibly arrogant thing to do.

Ah, fair enough, it was more of a passing comment than something I actually meant. MGMT are equally, if not more, wrong to react this way as Sarkozy was to be so arrogant but as long as MGMT keep banging out singles like Kids and Time to Pretend, I don't really care who wins this one.
