Malakian Works On New Project 2006-01-22 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 23 Comments | Speaking to Rollingstone.com, System of a Down guitarist Daron Malakian revealed details of a proposed side-project called 'Scars On Broadway,' which he hopes to pursue when the band takes a short hiatus later this year.
"I haven't decided if I'm going to make it a revolving door of musicians or one solid band," Malakian said, "but it all revolves around my writing." He also stressed that it would not impose on or replace System of a Down, which he maintains as his primary focus. "Serj did SERART. We're always doing things outside of SYSTEM that come back to SYSTEM in a positive way."
System of a Down are currently about to film a video for 'Lonely Day,' the second single from the band's platinum album 'Hypnotize,' reportedly under the directorship of bassist Shavo Odadijan.

Malakian seems to be turning into some weird control freak...
And Vicinity of Obscenity was the bonafide chart-topper on Hypnotize
| | | i agree with you 100% galapogos. Malakian is some crazed control freak. maybe even borderline egomaniacal, because his lyrics are good, but i think he would make love to them if he had the chance. i cant really say this is bad news though, but i think Daron should really chill about this.
And the fact that "Lonely Day" is the second single almost proves that he has declared himself the almighty of SOAD. This is making me angry. This Message Edited On 01.22.06
| | | man without daron there would be no saod but u guys are right
| | | no, i dont agree with that at all, toxicity, although mainly daron had obvious parts from all memebrs, on the hypnotize and mezmerize albums, daron has sung, played guitar, played bass and drums, i mean its no even a band anymore, and the musics no where near as good, and serj should be left to sing, as his voice is so much better than darons.
| | | i think if Daron can let some steam off with side projects, it will help keep SOAD from becoming a one-man show. he's always been a huge part of the band, it's just far more noticeable with their latest releases.
and yeah, lonely day isn't a great choice for a single. but at least it has a cool guitar solo!
| | | I can picture the rest of the band going "Now's our chance!" and grabbing Buckethead or something.
| | | isnt buckethead in the new GnR?
| | | What the heck is SERART?
| | | If malakain makes songs like lonly day, then oh dear
*shakes head in sorry fashion*
| | | Lonely Day is the new single?!?!?!? Of all the good songs on Hypnotize, Lonely Day gets the single? That song is a joke, or Malakian is a crazed elephant. I think its the second one.
| | | Crazed elephant, hehe. I can do elephant sounds. Really pisses my teachers off.
:D
| | | I don't understand why people are saying he's a control freak. Malakian has ALWAYS written a major part of System's songs, it has been said many of times, even from Serj himself. Everyone wants to say "OMG SERJ IS TEH GOD ON EARTH" when people don't realize that those are 90% Daron's words, but through Serj's mouth.
No one in the band seems to have a problem with him, why should we? Some of you guys are deifying Serj, when he doesn't ask nor want it. Also, you guys act like anything Daron does, he does without getting questioned - the band has a say so.
The problem is that you people are so use to seeing Serj as the headman forgetting Daron's LARGE part of the band. I just looked at an interview, and for Toxcity, Daron brought in 25 songs where Shavo and Serj from a combined 12. However, because Daron didn't say "Oh I wrote X amount of songs on this album and singing mre" people liked it. If he hadn't, people wouldn't be complaining so much.
I personally think Lonely Day wasn't a good choice for a single, there were perfect songs on Hypnotize that would've turn critics to their knees.
| | | But you don't know the inter workings of the band. You assume Daron just said "Look Serj, you're singing too much, my turn." Them as a band could've suggested it, and he accepted. Bottom line is, it's their band, they allow and do what they want with it. He'd be a control freak if he imposed himself singing, and the band didn't want it.
| | | Daron has always sung, and Serj wasn't always the singer when they started the band. If you've been with the band a long time, and seen interviews with them, you'd know.
You're use to the "only this guy can sing" thing you find in other bands, when this band is clearly different. That's what makes them unique. This Message Edited On 01.24.06

Serj sung almost every lyric in s/t, with barely occasional vocals by Daron. Though I like Daron's voice a lot more than other people, that statement is completely untrue.
| | | Still, the songwriting should be left to Serj, who did almost all of the lyrics on their first album which was by far the best lyrically. Daron doesn't have the same depth and vision as Serj does. In my opinion, he should stick to his vocals and guitar (which also faultered on Mezmerize/Hypnotize)
In addition, Lonely Day blows
| | | llamas are cool
| | | i dont see why its an "issue" for Daron to sing aswell as serj. sometimes the lyricist can only convey the way its meant to be sang. Its ART- let them express in any way they choose! If you dont like it dont buy it (or in most cases download it). Lonely Day will be Darons as Shimmy IS Serj's
| | | bringing Serj as the back-up vocals is really hit or miss for me right now.
I will like to see what Daron has up his sleeve.
| | | There is denying that darron has tallent, he has shown this through his rapid progression while in system of a down, i believe however that he is going against what s.o.a.d stand for, they are not a band that is totally mainstream which is what i like about them, how ever if darron hangs around this may be his intention maybe he needs this oportunity to show some individuality.
