Take That > The Beatles?

2009-02-08 by Iai EMERITUS | 39 Comments
Earlier this week, market research company OnePoll revealed the shocking results of a recent survey - according to 3000 listeners in the UK, Gary Barlow is a better songwriter than either John Lennon or Paul McCartney.

Barlow, the main singer and songwriter for Take That, has won five Ivor Novello awards, and has written big hits for the band that include "Back for Good", "Patience", and "Pray", although his anticipated solo career was a failure as he was eclipsed by former bandmate Robbie Williams. The full list of Best British Songwriters according to the poll is as follows:

1. Gary Barlow
2. John Lennon
3. Sir Paul McCartney
4. Chris Martin
5. George Michael
6. The Bee Gees
7. Noel Gallagher
8. Robbie Williams
9. Sting
10. Kate Bush

the fact that robbie williams, who at best, co writes his songs mainly, is on this list ahead of page, plant, gilmour, barratt, harrison and loads of other just shows the worthlesness of this list.

Lennon should be 1. McCartney does not belong on the list.

Jimmy Page co-wrote most of his songs too. The only difference seems to be that Robbie was nice enough to actually credit the co-writer.
Jimmy was also nice enough to credit the co-writer.

'Back For Good' is better than anything Lennon or McCartney produced. Poll confirms scientific veracity of claim.

lol yeah whatever dude.
List isn't very good. I like Coldplay but surely the UK has more than 3 better songwriters than Martin. And Steve Harris belongs somewhere in the latter half of the list.

I heard 1 million unsold copes of robbie williams cd rudebox was shipped over to china, destroyed and used as filler/mix as an alternative to concrete for roads. myth? regardless it's funny as hell. never heard that happening to a beatles album.

waah, people don't like what i do!!!!

on a serious note, while i laugh at take that and their legacy, it IS possible for a songwriter to be better than L&M. anyone from take that being better? no. but it is possible.

i don't see why these lists bother people. just because cynic isnt on it doesnt mean it's retarded. besides, no one will ever find a list they 100% agree with.

Steve Harris= should be on here.
McCartney or Lennon should be number 1, but I don't disagree with Noel Gallagher being here.
Also, dispute at will - but Benny and Bjorn from Abba should also be on this list.

Even taking my huge Maiden fanboyism (and Steve Harris worship), I would never put him first. He's really up there though.
