Ken Nelson dead 2008-01-09 by Iai EMERITUS | 4 Comments | Ken Nelson, a man who made his name as a talent scout for Atlantic Records in a career that spanned several decades, has passed away at the tender age of 96. He is survived by his daughter Claudia and her three children.
Nelson is acknowledged as a major influence in the development of country music, having produced more than 100 country chart toppers. He is credited as being one of the major pioneers of the 'Bakersville sound' that defined country for many listeners, and for diversifying the sounds and styles within country by allowing artists to record with their own bands, rather than the established stock of Nashville session musicians - a revolution at the time. Artists he worked with included Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Ferlin Husky, Hank Thompson, Jean Shepard, and Wynn Stewart.
In 2001, Nelson was inducted into the Country Hall of Fame. He was also noted as the subject matter of the genre classic "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels", by Kitty Wells.
