Christian Muenzner's post-Obscura plans

2024-08-18 by No joke names, please, or you will have a temporary ban. | 21 Comments
In a recent post on social media, prog/tech guitar virtuoso and composer Christian Muenzner has spoken out on parting ways with tech death metal outfit Obscura, while at the same time detailing three new metal projects in various stages of completion:

1. The Retromorphosis album (i.e. a new album with the members of Spawn Of Possession, more specifically the "Incurso" lineup but with KC Howard on drums) is finished, Muenzner reports, adding that "because of the label being what labels are today it will most likely be a 2025 release".

2. Pre-production of the 4th album of tech/power combo Eternity's End is almost finished, with final recordings underway. "Expect our fastest and thrashiest album so far", the shredder comments.

3. Last but not least, Muenzner announces a new band/project named Void Sector Zero, with songwriting for a debut album completed and ready to move on to pre-production. "The music," Muenzner specifies, "will be tech/prog thrash in the tradition of bands like Deathrow, Coroner, Obliveon, Watchtower, Toxik etc. mixed with some 90s tech death influences [...], jazz/fusion elements [...] and tons of guitar solos inspired by everyone who was on the Shrapnel label between 1985 and 1999." The lineup of the band has yet to be finalized.

The Retromorphosis album likely being pushed to 2025 makes me sad. Was looking forward to that.

Thanks for moderating this on such a short notice. Pretty solid piece of news I'd say.

is he planning on improving his songwriting though

@Pika good point. Retromorphosis is the main thing to look forward to for me tho, and there it should be Muenzner's tweedles added to Bryssling's superior songwriting.

Zackly. With his new project, you just know it's gonna be the latter. Dude can't help it.

Looking forward to the Retromorphosis album. Not interested in anything else CM is doing, however.

Great news on Eternity's End and yeah let the tech thrash flow, but please keep the death metal factor to a minimum.

-- and tons of guitar solos inspired by everyone who was on the Shrapnel label between 1985 and 1999

Are there guitarists nowadays who can play solos the Shrapnel way, who are not pushing, say, 60?

Christian leaving Alkaloid earlier this year and now Obscura kinda makes me sad. A Valediction was the best Obscura album in a long time and was expecting great things in the future. Good for the guy to have this many projects and ideas though.

He's claiming that the new Obscura album has stolen riffs from him on it

Woah really? That's sad. Tbh when I caught them live last year he seemed "off", like he wasn't enjoying it as much as the rest of the band. Good news is that if we add Alex Weber's accusations of stealing music ideas we know next Obscura album is going to be very good rofl.

They quit because they thought the material they had come up with wasn't strong enough (yet), but Steffen wanted to hit the studio asap regardless. Wouldn't count on the new one being good tbh.
