Ceremony is back.

2022-04-13 by Nikkolae | 28 Comments
For the first time in what feels like forever, California ex-hardcore, post-Ian Curtis band Ceremony has released two back to back singles in the shape of "Vanity Spawned by Fear" and "California Poppy" via a beautiful 12 inch black and orange vinly and digital format through Relapse Records.

Ceremony, formerly a poster-child of the California Powerviolence scene, have been consistently moving from sound to sound trying to find their footing ever since, as "In The Spirit World Now" they took clear inspiration from new-wave in general and from early New Order in particular.

“We do our best to keep futility a secret, a cognitive exercise with feeble reward. The Poppy field reminds us that not all things are meant to be altered. In California, Vanity is spawned by fear.” said guitarist Anthony Anzaldo Jr.

It is yet unclear if these songs will be a part of the yet-to-be announced follow-up to 2019's "In The Spirit World Now"

Listen to both "Vanity Sapawned by Fear" and "California Poppy" via bandcamp below.

I'd have liked their post-2010 material more if they'd changed their name.

As long as its the same members (or member, if theyre the main force behind it), i dont think a band needs to change their name.

"I'd have liked their post-2010 material more if they'd changed their name."

Thats pretty silly.

Damn! Last thing I jammed from this band was Still Nothing Moves You and I had heard they changed their sound but I didn't realize the extent of it. Woulda never thought this was Ceremony without having it laid out for me while jamming.
I dig it though. Cool stuff. I'll have to play catch up. Throwing Bricks and Violence Violence in general is still my shit

I just think they were better at hardcore. All their shit killed up until Zoo came. And I say that as someone who likes post-punk a little more than hardcore punk at this stage in my life. They just write it boring, but their last record saw them growing into the style a bit better. They just don’t do the sound as convincing and innovative as say, Viet Cong era Preoccupations. And they put on a solid ass show when I saw them in Memphis several years ago. Still a fan of the band, if a bit begrudgingly these days. Gonna check these out soon.

Spirit World wasn't amazing or even great, but I think it was closer to catching a spark than L Shaped Man, personally. I just call that shit L cause everything they did immediately gave me the feeling that it's been done better somewhere else. Could say that about all their newer stuff period, but hopefully they'll turn into a great post punk/new wave outfit with time.

Vanity Spawned by Fear was indeed a snooze. Basically a throwaway indie track but the hook was decent and the sax was alright. I probably like California Poppy and the minimal atmospherics a bit better. Kind of works on a late 2010s Nick Cave level, I guess. Nothing to write home about though, cause the song definitely doesn't go anywhere. They were also better at the immature fuck everything/fuck society/I hate grown ups lyrics than whatever blasé bullshit they're doing now lol.

@MD i’m reading everything ur saying and see nothing but facts within it
@comby i’m not sure if this falls under post punk/new wave or if it’s just straight up funky indie idk. but bands like soft kill and this cold night are some newer PP bands i enjoy. if ur looking for classics u can never go wrong with Unknown Pleasures, Power Corruption and Lies/Low Life from New Order, Bauhaus, Wire’s debut (tho more protopunk [if u dig them peep Screamers]), the chameleons

@combustion:

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Tender Prey, Henry's Dream, Let Love In

Interpol: Turn on the Bright Lights

Scratch Acid: Scratch Acid

Iceage: New Brigade, You're Nothing, Plowing into the Field of Love (first two are more of a hardcore, post punk blend but really cool)

Joy Division: Unknown Pleasures, Closer, Les Bains Douches 18 December 1979

The Ex: Mudbird Shivers

The Gun Club: Fire of Love, Miami

Women: Public Strain

Preoccupations: Viet Cong

Have a Nice Life: Deathconciousness (not exactly pp but gets lumped in a lot)

Christian Death: Only Theatre of Pain

Protomartyr: Relatives in Descent, The Agent Intellect

Siouxsie & the Banshees: Juju, Tinderbox

The Cure: Pornography, Disintegration

The Smiths: The Smiths

IDLES: Brutalism

Viagra Boys: Street Worms

Public Image Ltd: Metal Box

Sonic Youth: Sister, Daydream Nation, Goo

The Au Pairs: Playing With a Different Sex

Institute: Institute

That should be plenty.

"Thats pretty silly."

When a band makes a total change in direction it generally works or it doesn't. When it doesn't any subsequent release just further tarnishes that band's legacy. Given that that's the case here and Ceremony's going to go down in history more as a mid post-punk band than a legendary hardcore band, a fact that is cemented more with each mid post-punk album they release, yeah I'd have liked their post-2010 material more if they'd changed their name.

I think changing your name, you generally lose a good chunk of your fans because they're simply not as informed or willing to go see "another band" even tho it's the same members. it's really only worked for a handful of bands

changing ur band name only worked before the internet / surge of millions of bands happened. now it’s just Silly to do so imo unless it’s for an obvious reason like a member dying
