Cobain Tops NME Heroes List

2006-05-10 by Senor_Whippy | 36 Comments
The late Nirvana frontman topped the list in a poll voted for by NME readers. Cobain saw off competition from the likes of Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and even Elvis Presley to become the 'most inspiring Rock n' roll icon of all time'. The full top 10 is as follows:

1. Kurt Cobain (Nirvana)
2. Pete Doherty (The Libertines/Babyshambles)
3. Morrissey
4. Liam Gallagher (Oasis)
5. Carl Barat (The Libertines/ Dirty Pretty Things)
6. Thom Yorke (Radiohead)
7. Noel Gallgher (Oasis)
8. David Bowie
9. Ian Brown
10. Ian Curtus (Joy Division)

Surprise additions to the list included Anotony Hegarty from Antony And The Johnsons, troubled Manic Street Preacher Guitarist Richey Edwards, Arctic Monkeys' frontman Alex Turner and most surprising of all, David Gedge of cult British Indie band The Wedding Present.

How in any way is Cobain's story more inspiring than Johnny Cash's? He blew his brains out and left his child with Courtney Love...alone. NME, what trash.

Why the fuck are any of those people doing on the top 10, and some of them such a morrisey and pete doherty shouldn't even be on the list. I like Oasis, and I like Nirvana. But the top 10 should have contained everyone they said Cobain "saw-off."

Well actually, the NME readers are trash, according to this news thing. I shouldn't be discrediting the magazine for it's obvious contributions to society, but yeah.

How the fuck does Pete Fuckin Doherty beat out every one in this "most inspiring artists" list?

This is shit.

Eliminator be damned, yay for Ian Curtis.

2000 comments, Eliminator.

This is an okay list. At least they got Ian Curtis and Thom Yorke up there.

That list blows. For a list of supposed "most inspiring" musicians, almost all of those people are very obscure considing.

Cobain is an inspiration to emos everywhere. Other than that, he's got no reason to be on that list. All names mentioned at the beginning should be on the list in very high positions. This list is terrible.

Actually if it weren't for kurt cobain's band I wouldn't be listening to any of the music that I listen to now. He's probably on there because he didn't give a shit about anything, but thats mainly due to the fact that he was a heroine addict.
Kurt Cobain doesn't deserve to be at number, but he still should have a spot somewhere on that list. Nirvana was a very overrated band, but their great for any one who is new to the rock genre.
........and Thom Yorke should be in the top five.

I'm more outraged at John Lennon only getting to #18 behide the likes of Axl Rose and Ian Brown. I mean come on, Lennon wrote some of the greatest Pop song of all time as well as been the heart and mind of Britain's finest band. Brown and Rose on the other hand are two of the biggest arseholes I've ever heard of. Brown hasn't released a decent record since the late 80's and Rose has one of the most annoying voices in history.

As for Doherty, he had the potential to make something of himself in the mainstream but he just screwed it all up. All he's known for now is being a stupid junkie rather then a Musician. The first Libertines' record was fantasic, plus it really woke up the British music scene. But the second album was nothing more then a drugged-up, pityful and bland breakdown record. And as for Babyshambles.....tut! well where do we start

Oh yeah by the way, where the **** was Jagger on that list or even Ray Davis?

Pete Doherty is a Talent.......less drug taking waste of little skill or musicla prowess. I agree with Kurt being no.1 but Karl who??!!! wat has he done compared to many, incl myself (probably!) lol, now i have saved money, i still buy NME, just not toilet roll......

Why did an imensily natural talented but mediocre musician like pete doherty make it within 300 feet of an insiprational list. He's been given everything and whats he got to show for it, a drug addiction and a famous girlfriend.Kurt cobain is a good musician but inspirational? not really. Now Ozzy Osbourne, he's overcome a lack of singing ability to become one of the most famous vocalists in the world

This list is trash, as i have expressed on the muse of the same topic. Druggies are not an inspiration, larger louts are not inspirations so therefore NME must not be inspirations.

I dont like NME anyways but this supports my theory for why its sucks.

I don't understand how Cobain is a hero if he killed himself. Not a lot of people I know look up to somehow who took his own life

I guess he was on there because he wasn't like your average rock star and he gave the kids of gen x someone to look up to.

Although I totally agree, I think it's more to do with inspiration on a musical basis - but I'm sure the public isn't this thick, as to put carl barrat above Thom Yorke and David Bowie. Then again, with the quality of everday living cascading down an excessively steep slope, you can expect every legit and logical matter to follow it down.

What what? John Lennon came after Rose? Axl got plastic surgery. John Lennon had a bed in for peace with a wife no one liked. It's not calculus here.
