Cynic Unveil Ascension Codes 2021-09-15 by Fernando Alves STAFF | 43 Comments |
Iconic progressive band Cynic will be releasing its new full-length, Ascension Codes, on November 26th via Season of Mist. The band is now sharing the first single, 'Mythical Serpents', which can be heard via the official Season of Mist YouTube channel below.
Or via Cynic's Bandcamp:

Paul Masvidal comments: "I invite you to sit back, close your eyes, and listen to 'Mythical Serpents' as a fully realized piece of music. No phones or screens necessary, just the power of sound communicating directly into the ears of your heart. In the coming weeks, Cynic will be revealing further details on the constellation that is Ascension Codes, including a 'Mythical Serpents' animated video, featuring the artwork of Martina Hoffmann & Robert Venosa. Stay tuned."
Michael Berberian, president and founder of Season of Mist, adds: "I have, by now, released close to one thousand albums. None have been more dramatic, none have even been more difficult than this one. I can’t listen to Ascension Codes without goose bumps, a mixed feeling of pride – because it’s a musical milestone, but it also contains a lingering layer of sadness. I hear Paul’s pain on this record. I can feel it, I can touch it. But it’s transcended. 'Art is to console those who are broken by life,' said Van Gogh. Here is a demonstration of that."

Thanks for reminding me Reinert isn't with us anymore.
Song's pretty good, it's got a sort of modern prog metal thing a lot of bands are doing these days.
|
| |
I cant believe this is still happening. Song isn’t bad tho
|
| |
I think this is gonna be a good one. I wish the bass was more prominent, but this feels alien and urgent in a way that was sorely missing from Kindly Bent to Free Us. Just a great, deeply emotional song.
|
| |
RIP to Reinert and Malone.
Found the track to be very enjoyable, will be looking forward to the album.
|
| |
Solid! Looking forward to hearing the rest, although having interludes between every song is just... why
|
| |
Well, I wasn't expecting this.
Will reserve judgement for the Spotify version as this YT mix sounds muddy as hell.
Unusually dark tone for Cynic though on first glance, I'm intrigued.
|
| |
^ I added the Bandcamp link ^
|
| |
Yeah, sounds much better on BC - digging the sound in general.
|
| |
Sounds fantastic! I'm so glad Paul is going forward with this
|
| |
Bandcamp version is like night and day, YT is so bad when it comes to music equalisation.
Decent track, digging the darker tone but nothing all too memorable.
|
| |
The Bandcamp version seriously sounds light years better hot damn
|
| |
Yeah, Idk why bands premier shit on YT when it sounds like garbo.
Track is solid
|
| |
OK something went wrong with that YT upload. Yeah I know YT isn’t great but the difference isn’t usually that big.
All things considered, song is pretty good. Will have to digest it more. I feel like Paul owes it to Reinert and Malone to give the band a strong sendoff. Unfortunately I still feel like to vocoder vocals don’t sound as good as Traced in Air. But not too bad (they sound awful on YT).

"I̶c̶o̶n̶i̶c̶ ̶p̶r̶o̶g̶r̶e̶s̶s̶i̶v̶e̶ ̶b̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶C̶y̶n̶i̶c̶ 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘨𝘶𝘳𝘶 𝘗𝘢𝘶𝘭 𝘔𝘢𝘴𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘭 will be releasing..."
It's not bad, though. I liked Humanoid much more than I expected, so I shouldn't be surprised, but Paul can definitely be a bit much when not reined in, so we'll see.

Ugh interludes in between each track is going to be massively annoying. That is a really bad decision
|
| |
Meh
|
| |
I was hoping I would
|
| |
yas
|
| |
track is GREAT
|
| |
Not bad actually.
Masvidal's comment is corny as hell though
|
| |
why are there so many interludes on the album? not sure how useful
"7. Sha48* (0:19)" will be.
|
| |
they're not interludes they're branching out and experimenting with grindcore
|
| |
this is actually p cool
new age vibes go crazy go stupid chill
|
| |
i really gotta give their most recent album another shot. this song is pretty good.
|
| |
It's pretty good indeed. Not sure how I feel about the production.
|
| |
Just reminding everyone that Traced in Air Remixed is the best prog metal of all-time and if you didn’t check it you are missing out
|
| |
Slaps.
|
| |
Took a while to get going but was worth it once it did
|
| |
Dave and Matt have giant shoes to fill so mad respect for them on this album. Like the single overall.
|
| |
Nice this sounds slick
|
| |
Crazy drumming. Song is alright.
|
| |
I was just thinking about Cynic the other day. I never expected to ever hear anything from them again, so this was a pleasant surprise.
Song sounds like a natural progression from their past albums. I can dig it.
|
| |
Production is in-fucking-credible, Bandcamp version is like night and day [2]
RIP both Seans ❤️ Really looking forward to hearing the whole thing
|
| |
I dig this. Haven't jammed anything after Traced in Air but I think I'm gonna play catch up
|
| |
Does anyone know if Malone is on this / any of the tracks? Gotta figure no for this track since it's not that pronounced / high in the mix as Malone would be usually. Also does anyone else want the growls back cuz I sure as fuck do, especially in this moody type of track
|
| |
Malone is not on this track definitely, my guess is that some of the songs were probably written when he was still playing for them but that's pretty much it
|
| |
it says in the article:
Recording line-up:
Paul Masvidal - Guitars, vocals, lyrics
Dave Mackay - Bass synthesizer, keyboards
Matt Lynch – Drumscapes
|
| |
also there are literally growls in this track. the first vocals you hear.
admittedly not much but they are there
|
| |
Yeah I was surprised to hear the harsh vocals in the beginning. Like I said I haven't heard anything since Traced but I was under the impression the harsh vocals were all gone
|
| |
el_newg I wouldn't exactly call those growls, but that was what incited me to make the comment in the first place, I would love for that to come back in a more prominent way.
comb you were under the right impression
|
| |
Huge bummer that both Seans have passed and won't be on this but it sounds promising and very Cynic
|
| |
Is it true that some of these songs were co-written by Sean?
|
| |
Listening to this knowing that 2/3 of the band has passed away is gonna wreck me. Great song and production, can't wait for it.
