R.I.P. Vern Rumsey

2020-08-07 by SandwichBubble | 16 Comments
Vern Rumsey, best known for being a founding member of the post-hardcore group Unwound, has passed away on August 6th at the age of 47. The cause of death is yet to be detailed.

A figure in the 90s punk scene, Rumsey worked with many groups over the years, including bands like Sleater-Kinney, Bikini Kill, Karp, and Yind. He was also a member of a few other bands over the years, most recently the indie rock/post-hardcore band Household Gods. Ken Shipley, owner of the Numero Group label and one of the people behind the recent reissues of Unwound's discography, posted a thread of tweets in mourning. Towards the end, he states:

"Losing Vern Rumsey is a reminder that an era has ended. That everyone gets old and and no longer fits into their shredded and ring-stretched punk band tees. Should you ever require a time machine back, I can think of no better transport than his chugging bass lines."

Ouch, ouch ouch ouch. Wicked bassist, will be bumping Unwound over the next week in respects. This guy had the lines for days (Corpse Pose, December, Terminus, NO TECH!, even Unlisted, a 2 minute album outro), an inspired soul and hopefully this RIP post will get some more people checking out Unwound. RIP

A real bugger. I'm sad they won't get to play together again, definitely one of those bands I thought might get back together after 20 years or something.

One of my favourite bassists. Great balance of groove and punk.

RIP :'(
