Architects cancel Jera On Air appearance

2019-02-14 by JackyTheJackRabbit | 33 Comments
Architects have cancelled their headlining appearance at Jera On Air Festival in the Netherlands over a booking dispute. The band was originally billed as the headliner for the festival but that seems to have changed once Parkway Drive joined the festival. According to their Facebook, Architects have "taken this step as a matter of principle". The band also state that hope fans respect that this wasn't a decision they took lightly.

You can read more of their bitching and whining on their Facebook page.

How can anyone not stand with the band here. The poster position isn't the main factor here, it has to do with breach of contract by the event organizer. They agreed on one thing and were given another, what business would go ahead with something they signed on for and were promised, only to be given something else. I'm sure they don't want to let their fans down over a poster position, but they obviously didn't want to be fucked over and taken for a ride even more.

They don’t clarify in their statement whether it affects their money, Storm. Hence the comment.

IMO it's really important that bands take a stand against breaches of contract like this. Festivals know full well that when they make these legally binding contracts with bands that they really are only quasi-enforceable and usually breaches will only result in the festival itself taking legal action. This is because bands don't often have the time, resources or even willingness to take legal action when the breaches are in relation to booking/headlining promises made. They know they can screw bands because if bands do kick up a fuss then morons, like those on that facebook thread, will take it out on the band themselves. More bands need to take a stand against festivals breaching contract because only then will people realise how often festivals do it - and perhaps they will redirect some of that anger towards the party who is actually responsible for the blatant breach of contract.

If they stay on the bill after having it changed on them they're just further incouraging the festival to screw other acts in the future, maybe even like taking them completely off the bill. It's important that bookers understand that contracts are important and there should be ramifications for going against your word.

I want to support the band because they've never done anything remotely negative or controversial in their entire career, but I can't help but feel like their explanation is super vague. Wouldn't mind a bit more information.

Get a new vocalist and then give them a headlining spot.

There's also the fact that sub-headliners often get shorter sets than headliners, meaning Architects would have had to cut songs they may have wanted to play, and that may not sit well with them. If they were promised X slot with X time, and then it wasn't given to them, they're well within their rights to be pissed.

I know some guys in the Jera organisation. They didnt fuck them over, not on purpose anyway. The guys I spoke to are true Architects fans and are heartbroken this shit happened.
It wasnt about money, its wasnt about playing time, that was all agreed on. SUM41 and Architects were the friday headliners, PWD was the very last band to play the festival on saturday. It was the fact Parkway Drive got a bigger spot on the poster, thus seemed more headliner than Architects. Seems to me they promised both bands an equal amount of "visibilty" on the poster, by contract. They tried to fix this by proposing different versions of the poster, about 8 of those were created. But they didnt find a poster both bandsh agreed on.
As a result Architects cancelled because the organisation was sticking to the poster they had in mind.
Comments on fb reflect what the people who bought tickets think about the situation. They see one of the bands cancel for a, in their opinion, very shitty trivial reason. They dont look further than that.
All in all only losers. The visitors, the festival, Architects.
I'd personally rather see them play the show for their fans and make a statement on stage.
This would have been their 3rd show at this particular festival. Its a pity, I would have loved to see them.
