Avril Lavigne: Plagiarist?

2007-07-04 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 14 Comments
Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk, multi-platinum artist and wife of Our Lady Peace singer Raine Maida, has accused compatriot Avril Lavigne of theft on her latest CD The Best Damn Thing.

Said Chantal, in an interview with Performing Songwriter magazine: "I find it funny that [Avril is] in Performing Songwriter. I mean, Avril, songwriter? Avril doesn't really sit and write songs by herself or anything. Avril will also cross the ethical line, and no one says anything. That's why I'll never work with her again. I sent her a song two years ago called 'Contagious,' and I just saw the track listing to this album (The Best Damn Thing) and there's a song called 'Contagious' on it--and my name's not on it. What do you do with that?"

The song's credited co-writer Evan Taubenfeld, a close friend of the singer and former band member, responded to the accusations, countering: "'Contagious' on Avril’s [album] was written solely by Avril and myself. In fact, we originally wrote it for me, so there’s no way Chantal was involved. I can't speak on her song or any claims she's making about our song because I've never heard hers.

"The only thing I can say is that Avril and I wrote a song called Contagious for my record. We started it from scratch. We wrote it at her house and we wrote a 100-per-cent original collaboration that only her and I were part of, and that we came up with the concept for it on the spot. I was going to use it for my record, and then at the last second she used it on her record."

It's not the first time Ms. Lavigne has been accused of dodgy songwriting practices. The Best Damn Thing's lead single 'Girlfriend' initially invited comparisons to Toni Basil's kitsch '80s hit 'Mickey,' but more recently it's come to light that the entire chorus appears to be identical to that of The Rubinoos 1979 hit 'I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.'

Whatever the fall-out from this latest accusation, Kreviazuk promises the case won't end up in court. When asked if she'd consult her lawyers, she responded: "See, I won't do that. I'll just tell you. Art should not be subject to that kind of controversy. Art should be pure. In my head it is, anyway."

Did she actually jack his song or does it just have the same title?

yeah, and that it was a long time ago when they were friends but now that they're not then she noticed it had the same title, i hate when people don't have recorded proof of their original song and then see that the title is the same, besides these songs don't sound like her last cd at all so there.

So she leaped to this conclusion based on a song title? And she's probably just not suing because she knows her case doesn't stand a chance in court. That said I wouldn't be surprised if Avril's whole catalogue was a series of marauding thefts from superior artists.

So, she has the same song title? I could think of plenty of artists that have same song titles.

I recall reading somewhere that Avril lived with Raine and Chantal (first name basis, I know) for a while at their place in Cali. Or some other Canadian couple in music. Possible, and I don't doubt it... Writing original lyrics are hard these days; unless you start combining obscure phrases that don't fit together, it's going to be taking an idea from somewhere anyway.

"I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend" ? really has the EXACT SAME refrain.

Here's a cover by Lush: http://weheartmusic.vox.com/library/audio/6a00cd970e4cda4cd500cd97169d834cd5.html
