Green Day Movie In The Works

2016-10-06 by Snide | 44 Comments
Pop Punk band Green Day have confirmed that a movie based on the story of their popular album American Idiot is currently in the works, and was given the green light by HBO. Green Day's vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong will be playing the lead role, and the movie's script was written by Rolin Jones (Weeds, Boardwalk Empire). Tom Hanks also apparently has some involvement in the movie. No release date or other details have been confirmed as of yet.

"Green Day have confirmed that a movie based on the story of their popular album American Idiot is currently in the works"

Heh, 15yo me would go nuts over this. But good for them, was a good album.

"Green Day's vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong will be playing the lead role..."

Get fucked.

"not saying that this doesnt seem like itll be shit. but this isnt a new thing theyre doing its been in the works"

Doesn't change the fact that they're ridiculously late and with their popularity only declining since the vast majority of people into them back when that album first dropped have most likely moved on

There's absolutely no point to this other than as an ego stroke, I doubt there were many people who genuinely wanted this to happen back when American Idiot was still in every single radio in the universe and I can't possibly imagine who could possibly want this to happen 12 years later other than people with undying attachments to their nostalgia (Which on reflection there's probably a good number of since everyone gets nostalgic over everything now), or to just laugh at its inevitable awfulness

"There's absolutely no point to this other than as an ego stroke..."

Billie Joe Armstrong is the Geoff Tate of pop punk and it's only a matter of time when he breaks up with Green Day, starts a lengthy legal battle over naming rights then starts a new band called American Idiots.

The album was nothing but a cash grab. Green Day is going to find even more ways to milk that disaster of an album until they die.

Really not sure how I feel about yet another adaptation of it though, the play was decent.
