Travis Leaves A Lot Like Birds

2016-02-22 by Thompson D. Gerhart STAFF | 46 Comments
A Lot Like Birds have announced that they have parted ways with vocalist Kurt Travis. According to Travis, the split was not a "clean break," though he also states that he left the band "of his own accord."

As of the moment it appears that Kurt will focus on his solo career after departing the band. A Lot Like Birds will continue with Cory Lockwood "expressing the lyrical half of [the] band in more melodic means" along with additional vocals by bassist Matt Coate.

A Lot Like Birds have also announced that they will be entering the studio to record their fourth LP on April 11th.

Update: A previous version of this article reported that the split between Kurt Travis and A Lot Like Birds appeared to be a mutual decision. This article has been updated to reflect the fact that Travis has indicated (via Twitter) that his departure was not amicable.

A user attempted to submit this with just a facebook link, and I figured if I'm going to write the damn article I'm going to at least take credit for it.

Album will probably be good regardless of the split, but it'll be interesting to see where Kurt lands next.

Interesting. I really liked Kurt in No Place and I loved his work with DGD as well. I wonder what will come of ALLB.

pretty worried about cory 'expressing' himself in a 'more melodic means'

kurt was a huge part of the band

I'm reserving judgment on this overall--but I will say that Coate killed it with alone., so if this means more room for him to spread his wings, it could be a blessing in disguise.

It is quite a shame because I was really excited to see what they would improve to, the already stellar, No Place. Still very hyped though, I'm sure it will be great

Man that sucks. Dude seems like he's never comfortable settling in one project, but at least he's happy! Curious to see what direction ALLB goes in.

Alone wasn't done by Coate. It was their guitarist Michael Franzino. I do agree it was a total let down. Kurt leaving is a huge buzz kill as well.

Bummer, but I'm definitely interested to see what they do next. I'm hoping Kurt's departure being unplanned doesn't show in a hastily re-written album, since they're going into the studio in April still.

@thecheatisnotdead - the alone. project was done by ALLB guitarist Michael Franzino, not Matt Coate. Franzino did the clean vocals on Plan B too, I wonder why he isn't going to again now that Kurt is gone..

if you think kurt dictated that emo direction this band has gone down you crazy, look at cory for that bullshit. the next album will be more of the same imo

yeah i know all the spoken word stuff (if that's what you're referring to as the "emo direction") was corey. hopefully the band will keep corey in check and not let him do whatever he wants because it definitely could get out of hand. i'm just excited for a change. both their albums with kurt were great but it felt like they were starting to run out of ideas.

Franzino's cleans are fine so I'm not too worried about the more melodic moments

Kurt just added an extra level of character to the music; his and Cory's work together was amazing and it's a shame we wont hear it again

It's on Spotify.
It really just sounds like a new project altogether but i'm liking it much much more than I initially expected to based on what Kurt was saying about why he left.

I felt like there was something missing too. I feel like their sound has been stripped, drastically.
