The Blackening- Best Metal Album Ever?

2007-04-30 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 34 Comments
A group of excitable Machine Head fans have proclaimed the band's new album The Blackening to be "the best metal album ever" and have set up a MySpace to demonstrate the point. Citing critical opinions from the likes of Scott Ian (of Anthrax), Pitchforkmedia.com and, my favourite, "Amazon.com - Fan Review"- although, no Mikesn. Poor guy.

I call bull shit. What about MoP? Reign in Blood? Rust in Peace? It's good, but the greatest? Give me a break.

its up there tho didnt they say summit like: '8 songs, 76 minutes, 146 riffs?' maybe they could listen to change of seasons which probably has almost the same no. of riffs in 1 song.
MoP and Reign in blood arre good also I just think that megadeth arent as heavy as people seem to think, tho hanger 18 was REALLY cool.

it's a hell of a good album, but "best ever" is a bit much. that award should go to "heartwork" by carcass.

is heartwork any good? I listend to it forever ago and on bad speakers so I don't know.

ah, look at all the friends sending supportfull messages. am I going to trust their opinions? no. should I trust them? no.
should I trust the "official reviews"? no, because somewhere out there somebody has probably said that the new zao album is the best new album of all time.
go listen to The Book of Heavy Metal so I'll stop ranting

i agree 100 percent, that song is fucking crazy, and one of the best songs written imo (though i still prefer "home" by DT to it, and maybe metropolis and octavarium)

The top 20 best metal albums are all from scandinavian bands, with the exception of Kamelot. It's up for debate which album is Kamelot's best. (I'd say Epica)

Anyways, The Blackening is rather average. The songs are long, but they don't have that epic feeling. It feels just for the sake of being long. There are some awesome riffs in it, like in Aestethics of Hate and Halo, but the albums just doesn't feel as a classic.

I call bull ****. What about MoP? Reign in Blood? Rust in Peace?
Trash Metal isn't the only genre...

Although it makes sense to use them as a comparison because that is what Rob Flynn was shooting for......

But the point in this article was to show that fans think it's the best "metal" album, not "trash metal" album...

Even though they don't really sound like either...

To be fair, supposedly epic sounding things generally do so through using piss-poor string/orchetral/arpeggio arrangements or using the sort of cheese that you'd find in a John Williams film score. That doesn't stop epic sounding songs being absolutely great though

Anyway, aws for this album. I really don't get what the fuss is about. Maybe it's because Flynn's vocals turn me off and also the sense of melody is pretty nonexistant, replaced with lots of Aggressive/twiddly Riff TM sort of things.

Im a big machine head fan myself but I can say with great certainty that "The Blackening" is NOT the best metal album ever, Its not even their best album as a band.

In order for Machine Head to create an album beyond "a masterpiece" they have to get Chris Kontos back.Soz Dave. You are a great drummer, it's just that Kontos is on a whole other level.

Btw the fact that sooo many magazines review that album with awesome ratings makes me sad.It a decent album man. 8/10 end of story.

(For me there is no such thing as best metal album in the world. It's childish)

Best metal album ever? Am I reading this correctly?

No I must be dreaming, because they would be missing out truly outstanding bands like Opeth, Arch Enemy, Pagans Mind and to some extent, Dark Tranquillity

What a bunch of morons

It may very well be the greatest of our time. The only album that I can think of that is equal or better is Ascendency by Trivium.
