This news is pretty late, but I know Sputnik loves these guys (for damned good reasons) so I don't see it being a problem.

Sweet artwork, and sweet music too.

People are right. This was posted last month. Who the hell are Minus the Bear?

The fact that you commented on the original news makes it even stranger.

I hope they don't recycle riffs for an entire album again.

Greg, I messed up but you don't have to be a dick about it. I simply didn't see these at the very bottom of the other article,
and thought I'd share so others could see it.

A wee bit grim today, are we?

I agree with you guys though, the artwork looks awesome. The music sounds like the best moments from Red in Tooth, so the release should be nothing less than fantastic.

No worries man, I didn't take it that way. =]

I can understand where you're coming from, but I personally like the album title. It's not the most original title, granted, but I like the concept of the album. But then again, I have ORBS as my avatar so I suppose that's implied.

It's not a concern with originality, it's that it doesn't make sense.

The Sleep of Reason? How does this not make sense?

gyro, they're not insinuating that reason actually goes to sleep. like, in a bed, in pajamas.

Familiar with "the voice of reason"? What does "the sleep of reason" mean?

marksellsuswallets

Probably a commentary on the insistence of religious groups that hold fast to their tenants of creationism and whatnot and want evolution thrown out of education as a pseudoscience or something. That's basically what every song they've ever written is about.

Maybe the fall of reason then? Or lack of reason. Idk, but it's pretty incoherent as is.

The world in general goes through cycles of scientific and scholarly awakening and religious fanaticism every few hundred years or so so it makes perfect sense any way you try to look at it to me...regardless album's going to rule.

"Maybe the fall of reason then? Or lack of reason. Idk, but it's pretty incoherent as is."

Not really, because that isn't the same. A "fall" implies it's permanently disappearing, but a "sleep" implies a temporary state. Which, as Mark mentioned, makes a lot of sense given the context of our world.

i don't mean to sound rude, but it seems to me like you guys are contriving yourselves to find meaning in something really vague and kind of nonsensical. i'm like 99% sure that they got the quote from something written by francisco de goya, which, when translated from spanish to english, can either be interpreted as 'the sleep of reason brings forth monsters' or 'the dreams of reason bring forth monsters.' with context both make sense, although many prefer the latter. neither were meant to be interpreted the way mark did though. i honestly have no idea how he arrived to his conclusion, but it's supposed to be a scathing criticism of the follies of man and our vices.

it's all a little philosophical for my liking, and this is why i hate trying to find meaning from intentionally ambiguous statements like those. it's just purposely difficult and walks hand-in-hand with modernism and postmodernism.

Matt, I barely looked into it at all and the title makes complete sense to me. On the other hand, you're delving into it even further than you say we are, considering possible origins, etc. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but it seems you're saying that just because it seems this may have come from Francisco de Goya, it can't make sense without the rest of the phrase it typically belongs in? That doesn't make a lot of sense, does it?

"The Sleep of Reason" stands alone here, and makes sense. Reason sleeping = temporary lulls in rationality. If you want to pull in "men's vices" here, you could say the sleep of reason is when vices take control of mankind. Giving into instinct and desiring pleasure exclusively, etc. Know'ahmean?

When people start worshipping porcelain statues or sticking knives into virgins to appease the sun or wind, Or when people assault and murder others for "insulting their beliefs" etc...These are examples of actions with limited reason. You may say, no reason OR that the part of their brains that regulates reason...Has gone to sleep.
The word sleep implies a passiveness, like the passive nature of those who are too drowsy to question the institutions and bullshit around them. people are becoming too caught up in irrelevant bright light-banality to examine all the BS that they swallow on a daily basis, sleepwalking through life absorbing silliness like a sponge.
See Goya's "The Sleep of reason brings forth monsters" for the visual interpretation.

Actually... OmahaStlyee94 nailed it previously. My bad.
But for those who don't dig words, check out Goya.
