Fans Piss Off Trivium Frontman

2006-12-23 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 67 Comments
Blabbermouth.net has posted a fan-submitted report of Trivium's set in support of Iron Maiden at London's Earl's Court last night, when the group's frontman Matt Heafy and bassist Paolo Gregoletto were allegedly treated to a generous shower of piss from old-school Maiden fans.

Wrote George Byron-Roberts: "Trivium frontman Matt Heafy interrupted the band's set [as the support act for Iron Maiden] at Earl's Court, London last night [Friday, Dec. 22] to chide members of the audience after being subjected to a barrage of urine-filled balloons and bottles. Heafy and bassist Paolo Gregoletto were showered with urine during their performance of 'Like Light to the Flies'. Heafy angrily declared that the act was 'really wrong' and that if he saw anyone throwing things at the band he would see that they were 'thrown the fuck out" and 'beaten the fuck up.'

"The left hand side of the stage had been rowdy with fervent disapproval for Trivium and their frontman from the beginning of their set, the band being lambasted with cries of 'death to false metal' between each of their songs; and throughout the set there was a constant exchange of rude gestures between Heafy and the antagonists. An attempt to block the missiles with a U.S. flag was shouted down by British fans, who angrily turned on the American fans, a group of young men and women who had travelled all the way from the USA to see Trivium perform.

"Heafy's polemic (after battling through the rest of the song) lasted almost five minutes. However Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson was unusually quiet about the event, preferring to focus his rant on the safety of fans at the front of the crowd and the horrors of war."

I'm not a trivium fan, but I find the fact that "old school Maiden fans" behave like that to be really pathetic. I hope this story is untrue or exaggerated.

Again, a tasteless gesture on the fans' part. But let's be realistic. Trivium supporting Iron Maiden? Shit, I'm surprised it took this long for something to happen. It's just asking for trouble. This Message Edited On 12.23.06

Well, let's look at this realistically. I don't condone the actions committed at that concert, but I can understand where the sentiment comes from.

Trivium are one of the most divisive bands in metal history. They have droves of fans who fight to defend them almost as rabidly as juggalos. But they have just as many, if not more critics who despise them. Especially since the release of The Crusade, which all together is a blatant rehash of 80's thrash with some metalcore influence and an aura of masturbatory self indulgence.

Add on to all this that the band's frontman is one of the most egotistical, thoroughly unlikeable pricks in metal history, and you've got a ticking timebomb.

Now, take a band with such a background and put them on tour with one of the biggest, most successful and enduring metal bands of all time. Anyone who doesn't think that there's going to be some trouble is just naive.

Granted, I had no idea it would turn out like this, but I knew Trivium were going to come back home to the States with less than pleasant memories of their time on tour.

In other words, Trivium should only tour with metalcore bands. :D

you'd think iron maiden fans would be more sensitive to other bands, since they were on the receiving end of crap like this not that long ago. This Message Edited On 12.23.06

Oh please, there's no logic involved here. Anyone who'd become anything more than slightly disappointed over having to watch a band they don't like is a fucking tool whether they piss in a balloon or not.

Logical or not, extreme metal has the most elitist fanbase in the world. It's difficult to condense, but if a band hails themselves as metal but metal listeners consider them a false representation of metal, they'll be met with intense animosity.

This was just a matter of time. Had Trivium called themselves black metal instead of thrash they's probably be dead.

What kind of a dick would do that? Even if they are a shitty band (I don't know I've never listened) that's no reason to be such an ass. But yeah they were asking for something to happen by touring with Iron Maiden and if something didn't happpen I would be surprised.

Of course they do. You said you can understand the sentiment, which means you identify with it on some logical level.

No, I understand the source of their being piss-throwingly mad. It's like saying you understand what got a guy so mad that he punched a guy out. It wasn't a logically sound decision, but he was emotional enough that he didn't really care. Same thing, and still stupid.

I saw them with Bullet For My Valentine supporting, who got beer thrown at them... however someone also felt the need to throw beer at Adrian during the first couple Maiden songs. ****ing bastards lol.

From what I understand, British metal fans and British soccer fans are kind of interchangeable.

I think that is pretty much the point of the extreme metal community backlash to some degree.

If the "extreme metal community" is so upset about two bands that aren't extreme metal they shouldn't go to their shows
