Last.fm Password Hack

2012-06-08 by StreetlightRock | 66 Comments
As of this morning, music scobbling site last.fm announced an investigation into a user password leak, following on the heels of attacks on similarly large websites like LinkedIn and eHarmony. Although the nature and scale of the leak isn't yet clear, last.fm is advising users to change their passwords ASAP. Further updates will be posted on the website's twitter (@lastfm) and user forums.

"do these dumbasses realize that many music players keep track of plays? you could just create a new account and rescrobble everything in five minutes. people are stupid."

What I was thinking. When I used the site I had a program that would back up all my scrobbles.

Someguest it was a different program that just stored all your plays and could easily re-apply them to your itunes incase you lost them all in an itunes crash or something

I've been using iTunes for 6 years and I've never had an issue with it.

lol scrobbles. They don't matter to me none.

No but I mean, Itunes (at least for me) actually scrobbles at the end of the track, whereas the last fm does it halfway through the song.

In any case, If I could get a backup program for last fm, it'd be appreciated

I don't think the point of hacking is to mess up your scrobbles or whatever those things are; the
point is to get passwords, usernames, emails and other useful account info in order to get an
individual's important information. As opposed to like, looking at their facebook pages.

but lol nobody cares dumb hack lol dix an cox.

Heels is right, my god.

Anyways, using the username/password combos retrieved generally wont be much help for intelligent internet users who use multiple passwords for various sites. It's the people who use the same username/password that are not only going to get their last.fm invaded, but also their gmail, yahoo, etc.

my main problem with this fiasco is that the site apparently can't keep track of my damn song plays while it's going on. fuck security! that shit's important, dammit! :'(
and i changed my password right when the little info pane came up, so i'm pretty sure my account hasn't been hacked.

My last.fm is fucking retarded anyway, if I listen to a song once it'll put on how many times I've
ever listened to it instead of just once

cristane

Are you seriously not concerned?
They don't care about scrobbles, obviously.
What they got is a list of usernames and passwords that can be tried on different, more important sites. If you have the same username and password combination for important accounts that deal with money or sensitive information, I suggest you change the password ASAP.
