Dylan Tops RS 2006 Album Poll 2006-12-15 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 24 Comments |
It's caused shockwaves across all nations, polar ice-caps have melted and half of Ecuador is on fire, but Rolling Stone magazine's editors are unapologetic.
Today they published their 'Top 50 Albums of 2006' piece, a list of the year's most essential releases in order of their... essentialness. Topping the list: Bob Dylan's Modern Times. Hailed by the magazine earlier this year as a "classic," and awarded the maximum five star rating, the #1 spot was never really in doubt, but further down the list lurk a number of surprises.
Wu Tang's Ghostface Killah pops up in fifth place with Fishscale, Clipse two places down with the long-awaited Hell Hath No Fury and the Hold Steady's Boys And Girls In America in eighth, however Tom Waits' Orphans collection's tenth place is sure to disappoint many who placed it atop their year-end lists, as is Bruce Springsteen's disappointing twenty-ninth. My Chemical Romance sneak in at #20 with The Black Parade.
Hip-hop was particularly well represented in 2006, with Lupe Fiasco, The Roots and Rhymefest each occupying slots in the top 25, while Mastadon's Blood Mountain is the sole representative of heavy metal on the list. Girl Talk's Night Ripper was the strongest of this year's electronic releases at #22, with Beck and Thom Yorke also figuring, while Regina Spektor (#21) and Justin Timberlake (#26) carried the torch for the pop market.
The top ten reads as follows:
1. Bob Dylan - Modern Times
2. Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Stadium Arcadium
3. Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped
4. TV On The Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain
5. Ghostface Killah - Fishscale
6. Cat Power - The Greatest
7. Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury
8. The Hold Steady - Boys And Girls In America
9. Mastodon - Blood Mountain
10. Tom Waits - Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards

Craziness, he's still going at it

Wow, Sonic Youth, TV on the Radio, Ghostface Killah, and Tom Waits!
|
| |
that Clipse album is the shi.t. Dylan's album was good, but not the years best. RS's worship of this album is mysterious. old folks. also TV On The Radio's effort was meh. guess they get the "black indie" politically correct vote.

Wow, a shocker. I think the lipstick on Dylan's ass is starting to look like Rolling Stone...
|
| |
I think they placed his album at the top before they even heard it. It's not that good.
|
| |
its unfortunate because they are creating more backlash then convincing anyone of anything. its a good album. maybe even very good. arguably top ten if you want to argue. but a five star classic album of the year? not by a long shot. This Message Edited On 12.15.06

Disgusting list.
|
| |
Mastodon is the only one that belongs here.

What did expect that Bob Dylan wouldnt figure highly as that as that is where they get their name from.
I'm pretty sure that's not true...but anyways Modern Times is a really great album...the best of his trio.

Donde esta la Mars Volta?

Better list than I expected.

Looking at the whole list its not bad.
|
| |
Decent list, especially for Rolling Stone.

This might make the list for Worst Construction of Sentences 2006.

RS does have an undying loyalty to Bob Dylan. I seriously think he could play one chord and mumble nonsense into a mic and put it out on CD, they would call it a modern day masterpeice.
No mention of Tool or Audioslave's album. Though, I haven't heard of most of those bands, I have to take their word for it.I hear great things about Mastodon though...have to get their album soon enough.
I just feel Tool's album deserved to be on the list somewhere in the Top 10...not many great albums came out this year, IMO
