Quality-wise, i'd say this is about on par with No Twilight Within The Courts of the Sun, which was the best (and longest) track off Insurgentes. This isn't even the longest track off GfD.

which reminds me... tracklisting:

I listened to the samples, they are all excellent. I might even end up liking this more than Insurgents. High five, Steven.

Songs seems quite good. Great to see Steven Wilson continuing to experiment and go in a different direction.

You know, I hate to spoil the mood but I'm feeling a little iffy about this one.

Wilson is probably THE foremost audio engineer working in the digital field (as seen with In Absentia, Deadwing, his surround-sound work, etc.), and he has the taste of a class-act (his stance against audio compression, his layered mixes, his continuing faith/innovation in the album as an artistic form), but for me, this kind of song seems to represent the worst tendencies of both progressive rock and digital recordings----instrumental passages that sound
like Garageband loops.

Except for Gavin's drumming, everything sounds a little static. For a guy who's all about retaining the natural dynamic range of his recorded music, there isn't much dynamic range. This is a tendency I've noticed in both the glossy perfection of digital recording as well as progressive rock. Sometimes it just doesn't sound like it's being played by real humans. (And I understand how this might be affected by his interest in electronic music, but keep in mind how infinitely warmer and present an album like Portishead's Third than most contemporary albums played by "bands".)

Also, judging by the song clips G3N3R1C provided, he seems to be sounding more like Dream Theater than ever (a band he used to loathe).

Hmmm... well, fire away guys.

Nothing in any of the clips provided reminded me of Dream Theater.

The clips point to more traditional prog influences (particularly King Crimson and maybe VDGG) on this record.

Fans of post In Absentia Porcupine Tree may be dissapointed as on this record he seems to be stepping away from his alternative and metal influences.

BlindWriting, Gavin is NOT drumming on this record. It's Nic France on this one.

I can't help but disagree with pretty much everything you said there, Blind. I loved the instrumental passages, especially with the saxophone. As far as dynamic range goes (I haven't looked at it on a frequency spectrum) but it sounds pretty damn dynamic to me. Just like most of his material though, the drums don't sound EQ'd particularly well but oh well, I've grown used to it. Anyway, it was an all round awesome track, can't wait for the new stuff.

Judging from the samples, the new album will be a great prog album. It also doesn't remind me too much of Insurgents.

Perhaps that album was a bit too experimental for me, but I hated the random NOISE sequences.

There's not as much outright NOISE on this one.

Yeah, @Sleepyhead, you really nailed it. Both that song and the rest of the clips had me thinking King Crimson. He's supposedly mixing their entire back catalog in 5.1, so it makes sense that some of it slipped into his brain.

Double albums are always tricky for me to get into, especially when you're rocking a song over 23 mins, FML, this song is promising though and his solo debut was alright.
