Yorke Not Optimistic for Music Industry

2010-06-09 by PuddlesPuddles | 26 Comments
Thom Yorke has warned young musicians about the end of days for the music industry in an exclusive interview for a school textbook, The Rax Active Citizen Toolkit.

Yorke stated that it is "only a matter of time - months rather than years - before the music business establishment completely folds." He also urged musicians to self-release albums rather than being involved with major labels as he described the industry as "a sinking ship."

I think the industry's collapse will be more gradual than Thom thinks, but it's coming. Can't wait.

i always forget how much i dislike tom yorke....them he opens his mouth. he's not entirely off base, the music industry as is cannot continue to function indefinitely...but months seems a little drastic

interesting that yorke is thinking about ways to release music. maybe he's been thinking about that a lot lately? hope this means that a new radiohead album is on the way!

Thom Yorke and Trent Reznor should unite in an epic war against the major labels.

Worst thing that could happen in 2012 is Palin being elected for president.

I don't particularly enjoy any big labels/companies/government, and the music industry seems most likely to fall out completely. so, it's a start at least. there's hope.

Thanks for stating the obvious Thom, totally valid now since it's coming from your mouth...

Really, is this anything new for anyone on here? Why was he chosen for an interview in a textbook on this particular subject matter? Anyway, aside from the whole 'matter of months' prediction, thanks for restating the obvious

The corporate fat cats of the supposed "music industry" will soon collapse in a pool of their own greed and close-mindedness - yet good music and musicianship will never, ever die.

Oh Thom...

Sure established bands like Radiohead don't need the backing of the music industry any longer, however for new bands starting out, how the hell are they going to get that sort of exposure?
