Dave Ellefson Returns to Megadeth

2010-02-09 by Trey STAFF | 60 Comments
Megadeth founder, Dave Mustaine, has announced the return of original bassist Dave Ellefson. He will be re-joining Megadeth in time for their month-long Rust in Peace 20th anniversary tour which begins on March 1 in Spokane, WA.

"This shows the power of brotherly love and forgiveness,” Mustaine says. “David Ellefson belongs in Megadeth. Next we are going to show you the power of getting your asses kicked...HARD!"

David Ellefson concurs: "This is a huge moment for all of us, band and fans alike. It is a great celebration of the music from one of the biggest landmark albums of our career."

Ellefson will also join the band in support of the group’s current CD Endgame, which has received some of the highest critical accolades of the band’s career.

"We'd like to thank James LoMenzo for several years of loyal service on the bass, and wish him the very best," Mustaine adds.

I guess this is cool? It seemed to me that James LoMenzo was the better bassist, back-up vocalist, and songwriter (when allowed).

Edit: I updated the pic to reflect the current line up.

Awesome, Ellefson always was a huge part of Megadeth.

Not to discredit bassists at all, but whether this makes an impact in whenever they decide to record the follow-up to Endgame remains to be seen. Just another person booted out of Megadeth at the end of the day

It's still Megadeth though and I could care less about them and Metallica. There is plenty of thrash out there that makes both of these bands look medicore.

Don't know too much about this band's history, so I thought it was Broderick being replaced. Glad it wasn't.

Awesome, he's a great bassist. One thing I dislike about Megadeth, though, is their lack of a band identity, it's always just Dave. I don't even know who the bassist was who played on Endgame, or how many other times people have switched in and out of this band for different records or tours.

It's good that he's coming back for the RIP tour though.

"There is plenty of thrash out there that makes both of these bands look medicore."

It's always interesting to hear some people so arbitrarily dismiss bands like these. They seem completely oblivious to fact that many of the bands they're trying to compare them with might never have existed if not for the influence of the Megadeths/Metallicas etc.

How many thrash metal bands out there haven't at some stage in their career belted out a metallica track at some stage? Whether it's just practice, live, or even an official cover. Not fucking many.

Hell no. Broderick is the better fit for the band. So, someone said that James wasn't kicked out, that he left willingly. Does anyone have a link to where it says that because that doesn't sound like Mustaine's style.

There was nothing wrong with Lomenzo, but in the eyes of fans Ellefson is THE Megadeth bassist.

I kind of feel like this was a fanservice move. Mustaine wrote like 80% of Megadeth's material anyway. "Endgame" proved that Megadeth could make an awesome album even with a revolving door of musicians. Also, there wasn't anything that Ellefson could do that Lomenzo couldn't.

But then again, what Bfhurricane said is really true

A matter of opinion buddy ; ).

Dude, it's not like I've never listened to those bands, let alone understand the profound influence that both had on thrash in general. However, that wasn't the point of my statement and just because you reinvented the wheel doesn't mean someone can't come along and do it better.

^ True but on Sputnik to like Metallica is pretty much taboo, especially liking them more than Megadeth.

With people like myself, it has nothing to do with that. I could give two fucks about what this site thinks in my taste in metal.

Yeah I would also like a source saying he left willingly. I have no idea what's true so I'm not saying that's not, but it's definitely bullshit if he got kicked out for this.

see i don't get that, lol. doesn't the 'profound influence' bit even elicit any level of respect at all? no? yet you feel obligated to make a post expressing your complete dismissal of them as relevant musical entities?

these guys are like the elder statesmen of the genre. they're mostly a bunch a 50 year olds still doing a reasonable job of tearing shit up. give em a break ffs, lol.

for sure. still it's unusual for someone to say 'i love thrash metal', and then go out their way to say a couple of the bands that were pioneers of the genre suck. not that i thought he was saying they suck btw.

the post is about a change in bass player. he said he doesn't care what people think of his opinion, yet it was obviously important enough to him to make sure we're all crystal clear on exactly where he stands.

if you don't care what ppl think, and you 'couldn't care less' about the bands in question, why go to a thread that will undoubtedly attract ppl who do and post that shit?. unless of course ur some kind of tosser who gets off in pissing ppl off... i don't have issue with his opinion at all, i just thought the comment was weak.

LoMenzo was fine and I felt the band was whole and sparkly shiny with Broderick and him rounding out the lineup with Shawn on the drums.

Bringing Ellefson back in just makes it seem like Dave's pining for the glory days again.

And, granted I fucking love Marty Friedman, I see zero chance of him rejoining Megadeth, and that's a good thing considering that Broderick is about a pinch and a half better than him.

Sorry to bump this, but I guess LoMenzo was leaving anyway, and Shawn Drover alerted Ellefson of this and told him to talk to Dave.

Just to shield Dave from any undue accusations on the matter. I know nobody really cares. :]
