Coldplay And Satriani Resolve Suit

2009-09-15 by Observer EMERITUS | 27 Comments
A representative for Joe Satriani has told Billboard that the guitarist's plagiarism suit with Coldplay has been resolved.

Details of the actual case remained sealed, but presumably some financial settlement has been reached.

Last December, Satriani filed a lawsuit against the members of Coldplay alleging that their song 'Viva La Vida' contained "substantial, original portions" of his 2004 composition 'If I Could Fly.'

Satriani refused to comment on today's developments.

The hooker felt lonely because Satriani just wanked the guitar and completely ignored her

I like both of them.
Glad this has been settled.

And Satriani an irrelevant guitarist? Are you crazy?
Whether you like him or not he is hardly irrelevant.

While I'm in the minority here, 75% of this web site's users find this irrelevant.

The worst thing about this is that it was solved to end negative publicity on both ends. Satriani didn't have a case to stand on and if Coldplay really wanted to crush him in court, they could have easily. However, they would have to do it out of their own pockets. I almost wish they had just so that I could witness the nerd rage of a million bedroom shredders.

True. He's not one of my favourites. But he's still decent.

Eh I like Coldplay a lot but they did rip a couple melodies straight out of Satriani's song, and honestly there's pretty fair grounds for a suit.

There's not much of a case at all. The melody is only superficially similar, with only a few select notes following the same melodic sequence. The rhythm to both songs is different, the harmonic content is different, Joe Satriani would have to prove within reason that the melody was lifted from his particular song and not simply a product of the chord sequence beneath it.

I don't have any particular feelings about Joe Satriani, but it's pretty terrible that his attorneys let the case progress as far as it had. Fortunately for them, they are getting paid either way.

Start about half way through for the comparison. When transposed into the same key the melodies are strikingly similar. The harmonic and rhythmic content of the song are different, but chord progressions are not copyrighted. Focusing purely on the melody, there is grounds for a suit. And no, they would not have to prove that the melody was lifted from the Joe Satriani song - it could be a complete coincidence but if they are similar enough the suit can still go through.
