Bloc Party Future Uncertain

2009-07-31 by DaveyBoy EMERITUS | 24 Comments
Speaking backstage from the Splendour In The Grass festival in Australia, Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke admitted that he does not know what the future holds for the band.

"We don’t know what the future holds,” he said. “It’s weird, we’re out of contract now so... we might take a year off, we might take three years off.... we might never make a record again or we might head straight back in and do a record. We’ll see how we feel come the end of this touring cycle.”

Bloc Party's 3rd and most recent LP, Intimacy, was released in 2008.

A bit of a throwaway line I guess, but still...

I hope it means more music and not a breakup.

Was their last album any good?

It was... different. Naw, actually it was pretty dodgy, they had a whole heap of ideas but didn't get to crystallize them and Intimacy sucks for it. Was hoping they might reel it in for another tho.

Intimacy is great if you're in the right mood for it. I guess it boils down to how much you liked Silent Alarm...or maybe it doesn't. I don't really like Silent Alarm, but I love both their newer albums.

As Alex suggested, the ideas that Bloc Party had for 'Intimacy' were there, but there was almost too many of them going through their minds and it only came together haphazardly.

I was thinking that their next album could in fact be the their best if they learned from the lessons discovered while putting together 'Intimacy'.

Yeah a few bands have done that. A huge messy album, then an enjoyable concise album later.

Every band's future is uncertain, this isn't news.
Also, Intimacy ruled.

Funny, Frank from Gallows said a similar thing, wondering if the band will still have the same drive in 5 years time. The press (*cough*NME*cough*) jumped on it as "Gallows to split up in 5 years".

It's intersting to see they're out of contract though...

i like them alot but i wish they'd stop taking themselves so seriously. if every track on intimacy was mercury they could have bettered silent alarm.

i dunno if this is good or bad. i have hated all their albums after Alarm, so i guess this news is going through one ear and out the other.

Why does he have to jerk us around like that, are they going to take a break/not take a break/make more music?

That was actually my biggest problem with Intimacy (even though I did really like it) - their drummer was largely replaced by drum machine. =/

LOL at the fact that his music taste inspired Intimacy the most

Ironically enough, it was the Silent Alarm-like rockers on Intimacy that were bland (songs like "One Month Off" and "Trojan Horse" were dull). Not everything on the album worked, but they had some good ideas, particularly on "Signs", which is one of their best songs.
