The Romantics Sue Guitar Hero 2007-11-23 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 12 Comments | The Romantics, creators of the power pop classic 'What I Like About You,' have sued the companies behind Guitar Hero for unlawfully imitating the original recording, and seek to have the offending game removed from the shelves in addition to receiving unspecified damages.
'What I Like About You' appears in the recently released Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks The '80s and, though the band's attorneys concede that the song was licensed for use in the game, it's claimed that the recording is "virtually indistinguishable from the authentic version," potentially confusing for customers wishing to track down the original version.
Developers Activision, one of three companies named in the suit, have in the past recorded their own imitations of the tracks to avoid paying extensive royalties to the original artists, though the success of the franchise means that they could potentially afford to license the originals. The current case is the first of its kind to be taken against Activision in relation to the franchise, but a precedent does exist. And musicians wonder why the public don't take them seriously anymore.
