RIP Mike Browning 2026-08-17 by John Marinakis CONTRIBUTOR | 3 Comments | Mike Browning, the influential drummer and vocalist who co-founded Morbid Angel and Nocturnus, has died at the age of 62. No cause of death has been disclosed.
Profound Lore Records, the label behind Browning’s most recent work with Nocturnus AD, announced his passing and described him as a death-metal legend and the godfather of science-fiction death metal. Morbid Angel also paid tribute, thanking Browning for helping make the band possible and offering condolences to his family and daughter.
Born in Tampa, Florida, Browning began playing drums at 13. He formed Morbid Angel with guitarist Trey Azagthoth in 1983 and performed drums and lead vocals on Abominations of Desolation Recorded in 1986 but initially shelved, the album was eventually released in 1991.
After leaving Morbid Angel in 1986 and briefly playing with Incubus, Browning founded Nocturnus in 1987. The group combined death metal with progressive arrangements, keyboards and science-fiction concepts, most notably on their influential 1990 debut, The Key.
Browning revived the project as Nocturnus AD in 2013 and remained musically active until his death. The reconfigured band released Paradox in 2019 and Unicursal in 2024.
Numerous musicians have paid tribute to Browning, recognising his role in the early development of Florida death metal and his lasting influence on the genre.
